AFAIK, they replaced the 327 with the 307 in mid '69.....in cars. I really don't know about trucks though........Andy? where are you?

you may be able to de-stroke a 327 to get a 307, but boring a 327 to get a 307 is a bit suspect.

Oh brother!

First of all the 307 debuted in 1968. There were no 327's built after 1969. The stroke is the same on the 307 and 327 (3.25"). The bore is 3.875" on the 307 (same as a 283) and the bore 327 is 4.000. They are a totally different block. You would have to bore it .125" over to make it a 327, which we all know is not possible. Incidentally large journal 302, 327 and 350 blocks are the same, and many of them had the same casting number. For example, a 3970010 block could have been either from the factory as long as it is a 1969 block. The code on front tells what it came in.


BTW, the 307 replaced the 283 as the standard small block V8 engine in 1968 and 350 replaced the 327 as the optional small block V8 in 1969.

Just a little trivia, but the 350 came out in the 1968 model year Camaro as an option and the 1st ones were dated Sept. 1967. I know this as I had one that I put in my 62 Impala. I had to even recheck the dates & engine code as I always thought 1969 was the 1st year for the 350. I don't believe they made that many in that year. But it's in the books. Check it out...

Yeah, '68 for the 350, which would be "model year 1968", so yeah late '67 would be possible.

As for the "what replaced what" debate....

283s were never in Camaros...so 307 couldn't have replaced them.
In '68 there were 327s and 350s at the same time
In '69 the 327 was replaced by the 307 and 350s were still available

So, the 350 was around for both of the lesser sized engines.....

for pickups, the 283 and 327 was in 67, the 307 and 327 in 68, and then the 307 and 350 in 69. (396 offered in the two latter years)

Actually you can bore a 307 to 327 the walls will take it, spent many days riding around in a 67 firbird that had the original 326 replaced with a .125 over 307, never had over heating problems etc. and ran like a top.

When I was in high school I had a '68 Nova with a 327 and 3 on the floor. As far as I knew it was the original motor. That Nova was a army green 4 door, not much of a chick magnet, but it would sure run!

So when did they quit making the 307? In 72 my Dad and I rode a bus to pick up a 71 lwb with a 307, it was my uncles. Little did I know this would be my first truck 9 years later....Sorry for the hijack

the 307 was still there in 72. Personally, I never cared for the square body, so I know little to nothing about them... to include knowing if the 307 came in it or not.
The 409 was long gone before the 67 truck ever hit the show room floor.

he did it metrical.

A metric 311 is basicly a standard 307, ... like 14 mm is basicly a 9/16ths.

409s came as an optional engine in the 1961 Impala SS, as a late in the year addition. They (409s) were made until early in 1965. The "new" Big-Block 396, replaced them in 1966. So, really only about 3 years or so? The smaller 348 was introduced a few years earlier, 1957 I think.
