Re: Anyone have Tilt Front Ends and/Or Dump Beds?
I have this extended steel front. The hinge is made at the radiator support
area. For now, two people have to manually lift it and put two rods supports into the frame. I have a hydrolic power unit given me and two small cyls. Can anyone give me ideas on how to make something to lift this with???? My thinking so far is some type of rod under radiator/frame with some type levers on each end to cyls? Help! |

If I were you and I didn't have the hydraulic equipment, I would consider using lift cylinders that you see on so many vans and SUV's to lift the rear hatch to assist lifting the hood. Just my take. But if you want to use the hydraulics, and you have both rams, I would mount the rams between the frame and core support. You'll have to do some geometry to get your desired lift in order to place the rams properly. Also, you may need to reinforce your hood and core support according ly with that hood being as long (and inherently heavy I suppose) as it is. That is just my $0.02. As far as the tilt mechanism you might want to consider electric actuators. These run off off of 12V volt power and IMHO are much cleaner to install than hydraulic systems. Here is a link to an install using this type of actuator. : http://www.clubfte.com/users/jniolon...gfulltilt.html You might have to use two of the actuators, just depends on the capacity of the actuators, the load it needs to lift, and how you install the mechanism to do the lifting. Some of these can lift up to 250 lbs!, Check out this link for a actuator source http://spideraccessories.stores.yaho...ocaulla12.html Last edited by lakeroadster; 12-19-2009 at 09:09 AM. |

Re: Anyone have Tilt Front Ends and/Or Dump Beds?
You can see more of us V12'er at "702 GMC V-12 Powered 62 GMC 1-ton".
Thats in the 60-66 forum here. The pictures of mine start #445 page 18. I have another V12 in a stock 63 tilt cab with 23000 miles on it. Thats what gave me the idea to do this crazy 64. Lakeroadster, Thanks for the tilt front lift links. I agree, the electric looks plain and simpler. I do not know much about hydraulics. But the price was free for two complete units. Those hydro motors also take a big amp drain on the battery. Mybe I can find another use for them. |

I don't know about the wheels, but the caps look like 55/56 chevy truck original caps.

Rap'em Pappy:
Would a hydraulic set-up with two cylinders and a hand pump like on the tilt cabs work on the hood? Cayoterun

Re: Anyone have Tilt Front Ends and/Or Dump Beds?
I have fabbed up many bed-lifts in my time. Late 80's thru the 90's was the fad on these mini-truck guys...
I always used a hydraulic pump (typically #4) and 8" to 10" cylinders to lift the bed. Came up with a tuck-a-way system that allowed the cylinders to swing out of the way. The traditional way was to have them pushing straight up, which allowed them to hang down, which ended up ripping the fitting off the bottom. This was back in the hard-copy pic days...will try and find some..

Re: Anyone have Tilt Front Ends and/Or Dump Beds?
I have the tilt front end for my 59 project. Haven't worked on it in a year or so. I plan on using electric actuators. Maybe this spring I'll get on it again (now that my 60 is almost done).

Re: Anyone have Tilt Front Ends and/Or Dump Beds?
About 10 years ago there was a black show truck at Goodguys Spokane that had a tilt front and dump bed. All the trim on the truck was either brass or gold plated (I’m pretty sure it was gold). The trim wouldn't have been my first choice but it certainly was attention getting and really stood out. I had no camera with me that that year, and the truck never returned to the event. The owners were from Canada, so perhaps the trip was too long to make a repeat. I wish I had gotten some photos.
