Steering Column
I replaced the steering column in my '71, but have come to a stumbling point. When I got everything back together, the pointer on the bowl doesn't align with the indicator...as in when in park, the indicator shows reverse. The bowl and cover can only go one way when together as there are notches. Any idea what I did wrong?
Whether related or not, when I pull the shift lever back hard, the entire bowl assembly seems to slide on the shaft. Since there is nothing there for it to bolt of screw to, I'm assuming it stays that way?? Ideas, opinions?

Re: Steering Column
You may not have it straight up. Loosen the clamps & turn the column to line it up.

Re: Steering Column
Is this a standard non-tilt column?

Re: Steering Column
If the column is mounted straight, then the linkage to the tranny needs adjusted. Put the tranny in park, loosen the 9/16's nut on the column that holds onto the shift linkage arm, then place the shifter in park and tighten the nut. It may take a few times to get it just right, but mess with it and you'll get it.

Re: Steering Column
I took about a 3 hour break from this, went back out and took the turn signal housing back off the shaft, looked at it, put it back on...and it went together perfect...go figure...
