Re: hei dist

pickup coil or the module? usually modules either work or dont you get no spark... the pickup coil that usually means there is weak spark or you get no spark when you try to give the motor gas

Re: hei dist

if it is a HEI setup: when I had the problem (on my 76 C1500) the truck would run until it got hot and then just die... if it was hot summer day it would be a matter of 5 minutes, if it was a cooler day it would run for 20 minutes... either way it would just die. I could let it sit for a minute then it would fire right back up and die again 2 minutes later... had to do this on my way to work which is usually a 7 minute drive... took me 20 minutes to get there... Luckily it was cool that night on the way home so I got 2 houses away before it died so I just put it in Neutral and coasted home.
I tried the coil, HEI, rotor, dist cap, plugs, plug wires... until I talked with a chevy tech down the street (he works at a chevy dealer/repair shop and has for 20 years) and he said on these older ones check the module or the fuel pump.
Sure enough as soon as I replaced it the module it worked fine, never had a problem since (well I sold it a year later but still see it around town).

In your case, I would say check the usual plugs, wires, rotor, etc... and the coil may not be giving enough spark causing the roughness... or it could be the fuel pump getting ready to go out... I am sure it could be a few other things but we would need more info.

Re: hei dist

does it "POP" through the carb or exhaust? Run a compression test. I have had several trucks the ran rouhg and did COMPLETE tune-ups just to find out I had a burnt valve.
