tuner for 5.3
ive got a 2001 chevy z71 with the 5.3 vortech in it. its got right at 143,000 miles and ive owned the pick up a year. im thinking about adding a tuner or programmer to it? my questions are do they really help with the mpg like some say? is it worth the hp gain they give anyone here have one added to theres.
will it hurt it since the miles are so high?

Re: tuner for 5.3
i dont think it will hurt it i know alot of tunners will void any warrantys on it but with 143k i doubt there are any. on risk with tunners are damage to teh computers ie: wrong programing of the pcm i have seen it before but its rare

Re: tuner for 5.3
Find a shop in your area that tunes LSX based motors, GTO Vette Camaro trucks etc a custom mileage tune will get you alot further than any programmer and they usually offer free upgrades. Or you can buy a tuned computer and replace your old one try Nelson performance or wait 4 me performance. I have personally used the latter till I found a local.

Re: tuner for 5.3
I would recommend a custom tune like 1969x11 said. You will get more bang for your buck. I gained about 3mpg on my tune from wait4me and a whole lot of performance. It was a duel octane tune, which really kicked in when fed 91 octane. I don't think it will hurt your engine, but some tuners will not do real high mileage. If you read on some other boards, the consensus has shifted from wait4me to blackbear for less expensive tunes. In my opinion either will be a major improvement. You can also get a tune strictly for mileage, but I don't know how they perform.
