Starter problem

I have a 350 (1991 crate) engine and a turbo 350 trans, I purchased a flywheel cover and it won't fit around the starter. The only thing I can think of is that my starter is for a newer model. If I go to a parts house and tell them I need one for a '72 will it fit? Or does anybody know of a good starter that is smaller in diameter that will fit, what about the Mini Hi-Torque ones that I'm seeing on different sites? I know now why the flywheel cover wasn't on when I bought the truck. thanks for any advise.
