cruise control

Hi guys. My 78 blazer has c\c, but its not working right. Sitting in the garage, it wil work (most of the time), but get it out on the highway it won't. So I guess my question is does it need to be taken apart and cleaned or is it something else. Thanks.

Re: cruise control

Engine idling and in park, and press the cruise button. The engine starts accelerating until I hit the brake. I thought that was a bit strange myself, but it did it multiple times.

Re: cruise control

Sounds like the control module is messed up. Thats the unit mounted to the fender well and you speedo cables hook into it. Your c/c shouldn't actuate unless your at a minimun of 25-30 mph. and never in park or at an idle

Re: cruise control

Would it more likely be a mechanical problem or electrical? Thanks

Re: cruise control

Mine on my 78 c20 did that exact thing. I hit the button and dang near blew the engine when it revved up quick. also on the road it didn't matter what speed, if you hit the button it just floored the gas. On my truck the transducer was bad. the part on the inner fender with the speedo cables going to it. I bought a Remanned one from rockauto for about $100 and it fixed me all up. Works perfectly now. It is identical in appearance to the original unit.

Look it up in rockauto's catalog under Electrical>curise control transducer. The two terminal unit is for trucks with no cruise indicator light in the dash (like mine). The three terminal unit is for trucks with an indicator light in the dash.

On yours the most common thing to go wrong is the switch it's self built into the turn signal lever. You can replace it very easily by simply disconneting the wire under the dash and pulling straight out on the arm then thread the new wiring down the column and push the new arm into the turn signal switch.

Re: cruise control

FYI......I found out NAPA has them as well for about the same price (plus there's a NAPA three blocks from my house.) Thanks again for the help.
