Any help with a starter???
I didnt know where to post this so here goes. I have a big block (454) with a new flexplate (correct one) and a new starter. I cant get it to stop grinding and hitting the flexplate really hard. I have shimmed down, up, and no shims at all. Whenever you think its good, BAM! another grind. Any help?

Re: Any help with a starter???
you might try asking in the engine and drivetrain section it may get more response.i didn't really have that problem but i had a heat related problem that i know 454's with headers suffer from..weak turnover when hot.i put on one of those little gear drive starters and that thing flat cranks hot or cold.

Re: Any help with a starter???
Are you sure you have the correct starter? Perhaps it has a defect.
Logically thinking, if changing the position of the starter up and down has no effect on the grinding then maybe its "in and out" position is the problem. Maybe the starter is too far in. There wouldn't really be a way of changing that because the starter bolts don't move back or forth. So basically, the starter could be the problem. Does it have a warranty? Maybe you could exchange it for another one. I replaced a starter twice before I got one that was not defective. No lie..... |

Re: Any help with a starter???
Had the same problem with mine. I've got a 454 with a T400 the biggest issue I had with aftermarket starters was the actual holes in the starter being cast in the wrong location, I ended up getting an original starter and replacing the nosing on the aftermarket one with the factory unit. Also get a starter motor brace, bolts onto the front of the starter and attachs to the block. The torque of cranking my motor over when the starter was shimmed correctly would cause the starter to move out of line and then next start bang ang clunk

Re: Any help with a starter???
okay...i know this might be a stretch but i have seen it so many times....are you sure that when you installed the flex plate that you didn't put it on backwards??? if you look around the center hole in the flex plate there is a little lip and that should be facing way from the block...
