1967 C30 drum removal help

I need a 6 lug axle spindle nut socket to get the drums off the back, or at least to put them back on, what do I need to get the dust cover off and the front drums off? Does the cover spin off? Once I get it off, whats underneath? I searched and had no luck finding any posts on it, and I haven't dealt with this beast before.

the front if it is 2wd dust cap pulls off then there should be a a cotter key lock nut ,flat washer and bearings,pull the lock nut and flat washer out and drum should come off it the shoes aren't too tight.

if it is 4wd your out of luck cause i have no clue

Well this is a one ton, the dust cap is hard to get a grip on, the drum sticks out really far and the cap looks like a nut, a big one, but I don't see how I can pry it off without damaging it. Any tips on its removal? It is an 8 lug drum. It looks good and I don't want to dent it or put a hole in it.

Forgive me, not wanting to highjack your thread. I thought I would ask a question since we are discussing breaks. How do you remove the big screws to get the drums off? I am just being causious so I don't mess anything up.

You really should have started your own thread, but I can give you an answer to your question.
First a shot of some kind of penetrating oil, I prefer PB Blaster, but there are others.
Then a few good hits with an "Impact Driver". This is a very handy tool for working on older vehicles, of any kind.

I am sure the cap is just stuck on like a normal cap, it just pops off, I plan on putting a socket on it and rocking it back and forth until it loosens enough to get it off.

"Helping" is giving advice or instructions, selling stuff is making a profit as a non-subscriber.

A "nice guy" wouldn't knowingly work around the rules.
Accidents happen, from not knowing better, and generally those edits and warnings are taken well by the poster.

Yea, Your right! I normally do start a seperate thread. Thanks for letting me join the conversation. I actually have one of those tools and I didn't realize it. I will give it a shot. I might have to figure out the tip and how to change it. A fellow Navy Ordnanceman gave it to me and I never used it out on the carrier while we were building weapons. I forgot I had it until now. Thank you for the help.

I actually just removed my rear drums on my '67 C20 this past weekend, take off the nuts, should be 8 of them I believe and then there'll be about 3 gaskets once you open the cover off and then you'll get a little bit of discharge (which surprised me at first!) and then you can pull out the axle. I "undid" the spindle by using just a metal rod with a hammer and lightly tapping it counter until it became finger loose after about one full turn, the second spindle should just be finger tight so you can shove that metal rod in there and just unscrew it. Hope this is what you were looking for!

Actually it was the front I had questions about, channel locks to turn the dust cap off, and 1 1/4 sockets turns the cotter pined axle nut off. Pads down to the metal oh boy, I am glad you can still buy replacement drums for the front since the dually extension is bolted on.
