How come my truck just started spinning both tires like a posi?

Me and my friend went out earlier to burn some rubber and gas and it usually just spins one side buti did a burnout and it spun both of them and now it does both of them everytime. It made me happy finally seeing 2 black marks instead of 1.
But i was just wondering why it would start doing that

If your trucks anything like mine, random stuff decides to work every now and then. You probably have a posi rear, it just wasn't engaging before.

Maybe the non-driven side gave in due to peer pressure from the other side.

Air Lift made a lot of money off of the single-track rear ends by their usage. You could load up the driven side and increase the traction on it, to the point that the other side would grip and give you more equal traction.....without a posi-trac.

Re: How come my truck just started spinning both tires like a posi?

My 70 short bed used to do the same thing, as well as my 64 short bed. I could turn the wheels and they'd turn in the same direction like a posi. Turns out my buddy that set up the gears put an extra set of shims behind the spiders. But on yours I dunno

Its possible that after you've roasted one tire for a minute it gets hot and sticky and starts to grip better making the other tire break loose. I've heard of that happening before.

The clutches in you posi are pobably burned out. when they get hot enough they will grab, Or your gear oil is really dirty and wont fully let them ingauge. It happened in my old chevelle, I looped it the first time it happened! I would pull the cover and spray out the pumpkin really good with brake kleen, Maybe you can dislodge whatever is in there. You can find out what gears while your at it.

Re: How come my truck just started spinning both tires like a posi?

Well one night at the track (dirt track racing), They decided to tech to top 5 finshers...Posi/welded rear-ends are illegal. They jacked up one side gave the wheel a spin and ...NO SPIN. THE REAR-END IS LOCKED. He was shocked...according to him "I can't even weld so how could I have welded it up?" Anyway, long story short, he came back the next week and said that it had been leaking fluid and got too low causing it to over heat and "welded" everything up to "accidentally" make a locked rear-end. Take it for what you want but it could happen...

Remember that the pumpkin is dish shaped.. so when you spray brakleen, be careful it doesn't spray directly back into my face...

ummmmm... YOUR face! i meant YOUR face. i would never do something so dumb

Did that with carb cleaner and a carb once. Blasted down one hole, and got an eye full out of another hole. Hurt like a mother, but my eye was sure clean.

OK, Cody....it's been 2 days, quite long enough to get out your leatherman & undo the 10 or 12 bolts holding the rear end cover on so you could look inside.

WELL?????????

Re: How come my truck just started spinning both tires like a posi?

After the spider gears weld themselves to the center pin from doing too many single wheel burnouts, you will have posi for a while, Then the pin starts to spin in the case and eventually parts come out the rear cover. How do I know this ????

Re: How come my truck just started spinning both tires like a posi?

The same thing happened to a friends truck years ago. It started to act like a posi so he did a few burnouts then the diff completely disintegrated! It was a 4x4 so he drove it home on the front axle with horrible grinding noises coming from the rear.

Re: How come my truck just started spinning both tires like a posi?

HaHa Sounds like what happened to me with my 70 camaro years back, only when the spiders came apart the C clips fell out........and then I saw my tire about 3' away from the car in my rear veiw mirror, Huh? So I get out and BOTH axels have slide out of the tubes and my car is almost on the ground.
What a startling sight I can tell you for a 16 year old! Anyway I fixed it, so I could do some more burn outs
