Oldsmobile steering wheel removal
Hey all. I wasn't really sure where to post this but it seems to me that quite a few people check this part of the board out so I guess I'll ask here;
Is there any trick to removing a steering wheel in an Olds Cutlass (1985 I think). Found a really nice read leather wheel in one today that I thought would look great in my truck (if it'll fit) but I broke my removal tool while trying to nab it. I fell into a converstation with a "guy" later on and he was talking about a lock plate? Is there something more than just a nut on the center shaft that holds the wheel on or was my removal tool just a POS? (well OK...it's a POS anyway but hadn't failed me up to this point. I'm going to try and find a better one today or maybe tomorrow). Thanks in advance, Greg

GM used the same pattern on most all steering wheels, thread size and pitch vary though.
The lock plate is below the steering wheel and will not be removed when R&R'ing a wheel. |

there might be a little ring below the bolt on the wheel. Not sure though. Are u using one of those metal plates with the bolts that go through it?. Those are crap get a real steering wheel puller.

Some of those just stink. Like Hooter said make sure you have a good wheel puller and not the $5 Grant style. The Original wheel to my 70 is still attached to the shaft, lying next to the shed. It refused to come off even with heat and Cajun chants I guess there is a few that just refuse to leave the resting spot.

yeah mine was a cheap piece of crap which didn't help matters. I just grabbed a new Lisle puller; hopefully it'll do the job.
Bolts from behind eh? I'll have to look. I was being kinda nice to the thing today 'cuz a lot of the interior was pretty nice and I didn't want to trash parts someone else could use. I think I'm going in for round 2 tomorrow Thanks for the replies, guys! Greg

Take a can of P B Blaster or some other high quality penitrating oil with you. As you are tightening the puller, tap the center bolt of the puller with a hammer. No need to wolip on it, just a love tap or two.
The screws from behinde should be for the horn button if I read that properly. |
