Calling all turbo guys
ok, my truck is almost done and ive been wanting to add more power. my and my dad are going to do a cam kit in the near future, but i think it can handle more. ive seen a few guys on here that have a twin turbo setup. so what im askin is what all do i need to do this. ive seen the headers on ebay that run off the exaust, thats what i need right? can any turbo work like one from a newer truck? do i need to make a metal box to go around the carb? any help?

Research research research!!!!
There is a lot more to it than just buying exhaust manifolds, turbos and tubing. A lot of times, it will require a full rebuild of the motor with strong forged short block with lower compression pistons. To answer your question: yes, the carb will need to be enclosed.

like c10volvo said, this is more than just slapping a set of manifolds and bolting on the truck with some turbos.
Ideally you want to match the turbo to the power level/displacement/etc. How was the engine built? will it handle the added stress? If it is stock, don't expect to boost it more than 5lbs, which would be a waste in my opinion, unless you just want to play around with experience. A carb has to be modified to run a blowthrough setup, and you HAVE to have an blower hat/enclosure.

The carb doesnt absolutely need to be enclosed, but it does need to be modified. With the enclosure you can run a relatively stock carb provided you have a boost referencing regulator and enough fuel pump to push the fuel into a pressurized box. The drawback to the enclosure is getting to the carb to do some tuning, you will have more work involved with any changes you make to the carb.
With the hat only no enclosure, tuning is easier but the carb needs to be modified so pressurized air doesnt go places it shouldnt, as well as so that it flows enough fuel to keep the engine happy. Centrifugal superchargers also can use a blow through carb with either method of getting air into the carb. The roots style blower is the one with the carbs mounted above the blower, and they fit pretty well under the hood of a square. I would like to drop one on the 454 in the 76 for some fun and puling power. The engine will need to be able to take higher cylinder pressure, not so much higher rpm. Usually the weak link is the head gasket, but go lean just once under load and you will have pistons that look like Laquechia's hoop earrings. When tuning and setting up a turbo system, you cant just slap stuff together, you have to know or have someone who does know what they are doing help you, without knowledge you will just burn money and break parts. Study first, build second, make power last. Not only does the engine need some upgrades, the fuel system needs them as well. Your stock mechanical pump isnt going to get the job done. You will spend around $1000 for the basic fuel system but you can easily spend a bunch more. More air means more fuel, its as simple as that. Here are some blow through systems that dont use the enclosure. Its more often you see this setup than the box due to the ease of changes to the tune. |

turbos are alot of work and expennce upfront but you do get sum good power.. search online for a forum call "turbo mustangs" lot of good tech and info.. not just mustang info also

It's compatible in the sense that it for a small block Chevy motor. Beyond that, no it's not going to fit. No one makes a "kit" for your truck. Your going to have to custom build one from scratch.
Speaking of scratch, have you considered what this will cost? If you really want to make your truck unique, stay focused on making it nice. I'll bet that most of the trucks running around are in need of cosmetic upgrades. If you focus on having a good running truck that is really detailed it will stand out from the crowd.

Yeah dude, bad idea. To make a turbo setup worthwhile on your motor would really cost big bucks and you would basically have to start over from square one to do it right. Money would be much better spent elswhere. A Blower, nitrous, or machine work+more aggressive heads/cam/compression would be a better options, but an LSx is hard to beat bang for your buck. Now if your dead set on forced induction: get an LC2-with a few performance parts you can make 500hp and get 20mpg but you would have to tell people there is a Buick 6 cylinder in there. That would be different.

I've owned several turbo cars before.. 2 Turbo Coupes and a turbo'ed 92 LX Mustang. All 3 of those cars needed forged bottom ends(crank, rods, pistons) to live. You'll need to run a cam with more lift on the exhaust side. Also, running a turbo with fuel injection is far easier to tune, but more costly. Your whole fuel system will need to be upgraded to eat least able to push 100psi of fuel pressure. Then factor in the cost of turbos at $600 each new, blow off valves for each, wastegates for each and an intercooler big enough to handle two turbos. Yes, they can make ALOT of power and still be very streetable, but they aren't cheap. I would focus on making your existing engine as strong and reliable as you can while making power too.

It can be done, it's not that expensive. Everyone is right, look at what you want achieve and research, research, research. Turbo's do require a bit of fabricating skills, welding pipe fitting etc. Someone suggested visiting the turboforums.com, this is a very good idea before you start.
