Anyone trans-planted a trans?

I'm interested to see if anyone has trans-planted a 700R4 inplace of a 350 in a 1985 or similar C10 truck they have used as a tow vehicle? How was it to do? What did you have to have, other than the trans of course? How did the 700R4 hold up? Or would I be better to rebuild my 350 and get a gearvendors over drive?

1982 - 1987 had 700R4's as an option. It is just a matter of moving the crossmember back. What kind of towing are you doing with a 1/2T?

Re: Anyone trans-planted a trans?

I had a rebuilt 700R4 out of a '92 put into my '86 by a pro and love it. Best if you have the 3:73 Gears out back. The 3:08 just does not get it and you really get better miliage with the 3:73 gears. Pulls great. I also changed the gear selector out so I would have 4th gear on my gages.

Re: Anyone trans-planted a trans?

my suburban has a 700r4 with 3.43 ratio out back. Haven't towed with it yet...been working on fixing everything that the previous owner fawked up...but other than that it rides great on the freeway and gets GREAT gas mileage with cruise control. Doesn't burn rubber but then again I really don't need it too.

I plan on pulling a enclosed car trailer. I'll be beefing up the rear springs with an Airlift kit and the brakes on all four corners. Your thoughts?

Re: Anyone trans-planted a trans?

How heavy? It can be done, I would add an external cooler and only tow in D not OD though.
