trans crossmember riveted in?

Hi i'm new to these trucks and I have a 70 gmc lwb and was wanting to change the 3 speed manual colum shift to a th350. I notice the bell housing style crossmember is riveted in. what is the best way to remove it and also where can I find the correct crossmeber for the th350, would it be better just to build a crossmember? Thanks for the input

Cut/torch the rivets- or I've seen people just cut the crossmember flush with the framerails. You will need to find an auto truck for the crossmember or check out Early Classic for a rectangle tube piece that will bolt in the factory holes.

Welcome and good luck w/ your project.

Re: trans crossmember riveted in?

to me it depends on what tools you have. a drill, hammer, torch, grinderair hammer and such. know many people have done this before but if you have a grinder and room to get to it. you grind an X on the rivet and air hammer the rest off.
