70 swb 4x4 project

On Sunday Curt dropped off my new truck.I have a 2wd but I always wanted a 4x4.Yesterday I took off the front end and tomorrow I should have the motor pulled. With 54000 miles it doesn't need a rebuild ,just going to clean up and paint. My neighbors are going to love all the parts in my yard!

congrats on the purchase, i really wanted that thing, but distance was a huge issue. glad to see it went to a board member and hope the rest of the build goes smoothly for you.

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

Today I got the motor and tranny pulled. One of the manifold bolts broke but other then that it went pretty smooth.I bought a wire wheel for my 41/2" grinder to clean the frame and tested one area.I was really surprised how well it came out.

A wire wheel on a 4 1/2 works good it's just hard to get into tight spots.

I know what your saying,I have come to terms that whatever I remove I have to put back.I also know just when you feel like giving up you you see the new paint on the body and you get a second wind.

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

today I removed the transfer case.there was a ton of sludge between the transfer case and the tranny.where would you think the leak is coming from?
I ordered most of my parts today including:
cowl hood, inner fenders, wheel wells , BDS 4" lift kit +other odds and ends.

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

Maybe a bad seal between the two. Were either low on gear oil?

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

Probably transfer case seapage.New seals is about all a 205 ever needs. The input and output seals in both the transmission and transfer case should be replaced as well as the lesser seals at this age. Also, any oil leaked from the motor ends up back there. And,grease gets flung of the u-joints and helps coat the bottom of the cab.

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

It looks like someone tried to reseal the transfer case-this is my dilemma:I am rebuilding this whole truck frame off-do I rebuild a 54000 mile motor and tranny? The motor sounded good and the tranny was a little low on fluid.Today I stripped the firewall and started to work on the frame which was in nice shape

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

I would pull the heads and give a peak into the cylinders....My 70 K10 had only 78K miles on it and ran pretty good....but I found cracked rings in two of the holes....

I mean, if your gonna go this deep into a resto....might as well make sure the power plant is 100%

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

well I got the heads back and the motor is assembled It's got a new cam, lifters, oil pump,dist,headers-should be getting the truck tomorrow from the paint shop.Everything is jambed and ready to be put together. One thing I am not happy about is the cost of painting has gone up alot from the price I was quoted but I guess that was expected.

Beautiful. I'm kinda intrigued with the carb you went with, when it's all up and running i'd like to know what you think of it. I've always wondered about them. It looks great though!!

Re: 70 swb 4x4 project

well I got the body back from paint -the whole truck is jambed. I put in the drive train and installed the 4" lift kit.I hope to finish the motor tomorrow. Also my rims came in 15x10 steelies.they are nice.A few setbacks:steel brake lines didn't fit, wrong u bolts for rear springs, and wrong front sleeves.
