396 in my stepper
My 69 stepper has a 250 6cyl in it. Since the 69 3/4 isnt going to be fixed do to the cab is shot...I am yanking the motor and trans out. I want to slap the 396 in the stepper now. I noticed the shifters are not in the same place as the other. I took the hump out of the 3/4 already since I was assessing the rust damage. since I have never done a 6 to 8 swap....tell me what I getting myself into?
69 stepper shifter. 69 3/4 shifter I notice the 3/4 sits further up towards the dash. The stepper shifter sits in the middle of the hump. Is it possible to set the 396 in the 250 position?

Re: 396 in my stepper
Just change the hump cover too. Put the big block in properly since you have a parts truck to scavenge from.
The tunnel cover simply unbolts and they are interchangable. That way, you have a properly installed big block that fits and functions as good as factory original. All you'll need is a different driveshaft made for the new drivetrain.

Re: 396 in my stepper
since they are both LWB I should be able to use the other drive shaft.

Re: 396 in my stepper
if the stepside is a 1/2 ton, then the driveshaft won't swap over... but you MIGHT be able to use the big block's front drive shaft and the stepside's rear shaft, and have it work.
Sounds crazy, but it worked for me installing 1/2 ton stuff into my 3/4 ton burb. |

Re: 396 in my stepper
The reason the shifters are in different positions is because ones a 6 and ones a v-8. Since you have a complete parts truck, do it right(i.e. motor mounts, etc.). Have fun and ask questions!!
