Dana 60
Ok I have a 1968 GMC 3/4 ton with a Dana 60 3.54:1 gear ratio I was wondering if I could swap out the old Barrel style axle shafts for newer styled ones that don't have the barrels like i know that the newer 3/4 tons dont have them and I would like to put a set on my truck so I can put some nice rims on it one day also whats the best style of posi I could get thats not too expensive but I can just swap right in with out getting a shorter gear ratio? Thanks

That's just the way Dana's are made. To get rid of the "barrel" that you're talking about, you'd have to swap in a different rear end.

There are plenty of nice rims made,too.I assume a barrel is the hub of the full-floating axle?There are semi-floating 14-bolt rears if you want a lighter car-like hub.

If you want a street rod type truck you would be better off starting with a 1/2 ton or swapping 1/2 ton running gear. But with new rim sizes, you can get low profile tires and cool wheels that will work with the 8 lug setup. You just have to go with a wheel with a large center and you will have to run a deep cap. With that said:
You can get Track-Lok or Power-Lok posis for the 30 spline Dana 60 your truck has. You can get it in 4.10 and lower numerical ratio and 4.57 and higher ratio cases. You can have new housing ends, brakes, and axles done to make the full-floater a semi-floater, but figure $1000 will be what that takes, plus a posi cost and setup labor.

Ok thanks now i know there are a lot of different style posi tracs out there which work best with this style truck its a street truck that might get time at the strip and its a big block
