Low Oil Pressure?

Well what is proper oil pressure for a 350 to be running? At idle I got around 7 and at wot I have between 25 and 30. If this is low for these engines, what should they be running at? And what would cause low oil pressure?
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Low Oil Pressure?

my 305 when cold on startup runs 60 lbs of pressure. When on the freeway at about 75mph its about 38 lbs. After hours of driving and at idle, its at 30 lbs. After it is warmed up, as in oil at 180 degrees, and i floor it from idles while in park, it goes from 30 to about 52-55 lbs in that range. this is a bone stock rebuilt 305 v8 with a flowmaster with 24000 miles on it.

Well I couldnt tell ya on that one. I know nothing about chevys. Where on the motor would that be? Oh the stock electrical gauge is no longer hooked up. I have an aftermarket mechincal one. If that has anything to do with it.

Re: Low Oil Pressure?

should be in the same place look in the back it'll be the hole to the side of your distributor
it wil be at "behind" your intake manifold and will have a brass adapter to a sensor and single wire (usually)
some after market pressure gauges have little sensors but they are still in the same place..
so good luck..

Re: Low Oil Pressure?

I get about 40 at idle on my 350 my truck is a 79. I also ran in a separate mechanical oil gauge. Check to see if the line to gauge is clear. How many miles on the engine ?

Re: Low Oil Pressure?

Ok I know where it is now. Miles on the motor, I couldnt tell ya. When I bought the truck, it had a six cylinder in it but wouldnt run. So I bought this 350 and was told that it was a good motor. Well....I had to change the head gaskets, timing change and gears so far. So Im about ready to just pull it and put something else in. Actually, I still need a carb to get it running good. So Im kinda scared about this low oil pressure..lol. But I think this motor is gonna need a rebuild anyway, its getting a little bit of blowby, so Idk. Cant decide on what to do.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Low Oil Pressure?

I had a motor that ran excellent and was by no means tired, but had only around 5-7 PSI at a very hot idle. It's been awhile since I ran so I forget what the pressure was during cruise and under WOT. I understand that GM recently had Melling update the stock replacement oil pump design to improve hot idle pressure.

Re: Low Oil Pressure?

also low on oil also does this when at idle it fluxuates like a tach and when you gas it, its up around normal check that and if your oil is good you have sometyhing clogging it or the oil pump going bad

Ok Thanks for that I will check into that. I do know it needs an oil change.
