NP205 vs Dana 20
Ok, So I just got some original literature on the 70 3/4 ton GMC NP 205 and it says that the standard transfer case for a 4 speed manual was the
DANA 20, what gives, How come I have been on this board and around these trucks for years and just now found this out. What info can everyone provide on the Dana 20 transfer case? Thanks Army

Re: NP205 vs Dana 20
That info you saw is inaccurate.Even if the Dana20 may possibly have found it`s way into a few trucks or Suburbans, they were only mated to a 3spd.I`ve seen 3 spd Blazers, but the Dana20 wasn`t used behind 4spds.Jeeps and Brocos never came with 4spds.You`d have to go to Advance Adaptors for a kit to do 4spd/model 20 swap.
I think that info is for Blazers. There was no "option" when it came to transfer cases. That was determined by the transmission. The standard 4wd transmission was the 3spd.So,the standard transfer case in a Blazer was the model 20.There may be an acception, but the 3spd trucks and Suburbans I`ve seen had the NP 205 transfer case.

Re: NP205 vs Dana 20
The Dana 20 was only used in Blazers/Jimmys, and it definitely was used behind the SM465. I have seen pictures of several over the years. That said, I parted out a '72 Blazer that came with a 465/205 so maybe the 465/D20 was '69 - '70 only or something like that.

Re: NP205 vs Dana 20
My 70 K5 was a factory SM465 4 speed with Dana 20 case. It now has the NP205.

Re: NP205 vs Dana 20
The dana 20 was actually offered for a few years in the 73+ body style, also. I have seen a few of the full convertibles (73-75?) with it behind the 3 speed or SM465. Interestingly it was also these few years when you could get the factory 465/203 combo, seen a couple of those as well.

Re: NP205 vs Dana 20
So, what are the real differences between the NP205 and the Dana 20?
The literature that I have is Chevy Service Guide titled "The New Process Transfer Case" it covers the rebuild of the NP transfer case. It says The Chevrolet K/5 Blazer models are equipped with two types of transfer cases-- the Dana or the New Process. The Dana 20 is used with manual transmissions. So now the question is: What are the differences and how come not that many Dana 20's are preferred?
