Steering Gear Reinforcing Plate

Talking with my brother about changing out stock gear box on my 77 GMC K2500 and he said it's fine but, he did recommend I locate and purchase a kit to beef up the frame. Apparently this is a weak spot? Also putting on 35-38'' tires, would it be wise to go with a different box? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Steering Gear Reinforcing Plate

You definitely want the reinforcement plate with your planned tire size. Lots of sources for them, including Offroad Design. You should be fine with that steering box. What amount of lift will you be using?

Re: Steering Gear Reinforcing Plate

Yukon Jack, Mike thanks for the information. I'll be installing a 6'' lift, new springs, no blocks. At this point I'm not sure what brand I'll be using. I'll look at some of the comments posted and get some ideas. Also I'll be putting in a body lift, something I don't really want but, sheet metal from my 1968 is going on the 1977 GMC K2500 frame and I know the body mounts are laid out differently.
