Well the truck has been making odd noises when i was cranking over, not like a grinding but more like the engine was fighting the starter and then it'd fire up.. well tonight the starter broke, shattered the teeth on the gear.

Went to get a new one and got one for a 70 396/402 with auto tranny and the bolts that held up the previous one are about 1" too long....

Should i just put on shorter bolts so it fits up right or what ?? Also Why in blue blazes did my other starter rip all it's teeth off?? is my motor fighting it and restisiting cranking or wtf ? thanks in advance fellas.

your timing is retarded (or sometimes too advanced). Adjust your timing and use shorter starter bolts. Make sure you have proper clearance between the starter and the flywheel. I usually use a paper clip to check the clearance.

hmm thanks hooter... i set my timing at just beyond the timing tab as the truck seems to run well there.. also it only 'advances' to about the 12 o clock position at a li'l bit of gassin it...

You can use shims to adjust the starter. Just hook up a power wire so you can activate the solenoid and push the starter gear out in order to check the clearance. Your timing is definetly a bit too advanced.

lovely... well i paid for the carbs to be tuned and the timing and such cuz i was having issues with it bogging (turned out to be plugs arcing on headers) and the dude set the timing at close to that spot as well so hmm ... I've even replaced the springs, bushings and weights in my he as awell as gotten an adjustable vaccuum for it.. this is aggrivating lol

No wiz on big blocks but----sbc starters come in two versions---aluminum head and cast iron head----they are different in height so that they use different bolt lengths. Otherwise they are basically the same. Starter bolts are rather unique so you may want to stop back and get the correct starter bolts for the starter you are putting in. It's kind of wierd that the starter gear shattered----usual problems are solinoid burnout due to not using a heat shield. If the starter strains to crank the engine block over with good battery and the starter it'self is good, you may be cranking against the timing being too far advanced but breaking the gear~~~~~hummmm. Buy starter with lifetime guarantee for a few $$ more and forgetaboutit!!

got the right bolts and the truck starts up easier than when i first bought it. ahh sucess is nice !
