I'm a foreign car mechanic, so I get all my cussing out of the way during my work day.

I'm actually good for really long periods of time... that is, until I finally snap

I make up curse words too, some of them are pretty funny.

I bite my tongue. Other wise my truck wins and I'm not going to let my truck win. Being mechanically challenged I expect these little two way battles between me an my truck.

Re: When working on my truck

For some reason I don't ever get mad at the truck. If I went outside right now and my truck spontaniously combusted I would be a little shocked but not mad. If I walk by my truck and put a deep scratch in it I just look at it and keep going cuz it's already been done and there's nothing to do about it. Now let some little snot nosed punk walk by my truck and scratch it and see what happens.

After so many years of working on newer cars...My truck is a pleasure to work on!

Don't let them learn from us.....then again, after a day at school, they can teach us some NEW words!!

Verbal tirades; throwing "things"; hitting inanimate objects....may make us feel vindicated, but they don't get the job done. Still, feeling better about how it went is priceless, right?

Re: When working on my truck

I bought my 72 approx 1 month after the birth of my daughter in 08, I was a hot-head in the shop, that cursed freely at my truck, and found myself having animated discussions punctuated with giving it the "Bird" on more than one occasion. Since then I have grown (Thankfully!) and my poisonous tongue has lost the majority of its venom, that is something I have been praying for, working diligently on, and recent events such as my wife dropping the garage door on the hood of our $55K Suburban have sure put me to the test this past Christmas Day. Pops was there and pulled me aside afterwards, told me how proud he was that I maintained my composure and that he was not sure if he would have held his tongue the way I managed to. For me I know that I can fix my 72, or have my 08's hood repaired, but there is no way for me to "fix" the way people perceive my actions when I am upset...or "repair" my wife's heart if I tore into her for something that is basically trivial in the grand scheme of things.

Re: When working on my truck

I find most of this pretty funny. As I'm growing older my temper tantrums have calmed. I don't throw things much anymore, and I try not to swear. BUT,....sometimes there is just no other way. Does anybody else use...GOT dandruff! Someof it itches! Or,.. farging iceholes. You know, I pulled the TH350 out of my wife's truck by myself, in the gravel driveway, with a floor jack. Rebuilt it. Then put it back in with only a little help from my son working the jack handle. NEVER busted a nuckle, threw a tantrum, or let a cuss word out!! Did I win an award or something?

Re: When working on my truck

I have given up fighting it for the most part.I still cuss it pretty good but then 99% of the time I'm working by myself.I don't often bust a knuckle because I've done it too often and figured out ways to avoid it(again for the most part) because it really, really hurts to bust the same one a second time(even more if it's on the same bolt).
I don't throw things anymore,it just costs too much.I'm usually surrounded by idiots outside of when I'm at a BB meet so I'm pretty used to having sh....er stuff go wrong outside of working on something of mine.

Re: When working on my truck

I am in the transition phase...I am cutting down on tossing tools and cussing as much and am going to the "are you gonna let me do this right now or do I need to go inside for a bit and come back when you feel like cooperating?"

I've heard this is better for my stress level. Since I'll be 52 this month I gotta start thinkin' about making it past 70. I also realize now that cussing and tossing tools doesn't get the job done any faster. In fact it usually slows me down. Lately the calm trend has brought on another facet....outsmarting the truck...that's fun and it works!

Re: When working on my truck

I have a 2 1/4'' round hole in the drywall in my garage from getting mad while doing exhaust work on my truck and throwing a section of pipe. I forgot all about it until I went to move a poster and realized why the poster was there. I've done a good job of mellowing out since then.

And the poster is still in the same spot.

Yea, the new foreign cars can be quite the PITA. I have been working on Hyundai's for almost 6 years now and before that was Fords and GM cars and trucks.
I wish I would have just kept it a hobby and not a career lol. My stress level is thru the roof most days
