power steering pump bracket for my 54 235

Thought Id share some pictures of the power steering bracket I designed and just welded together today. This bracket will mount a dodge (or GM) pump in the location of the generator/alternator, using the two bolts on the block. The alternator will be moved to the passenger side of the block via another bracket I designed.

This is the 3d rendering I did before I sent it out to be cut out of 1/4 mild steel

And this is some pictures I took as I was welding it together

to adjust the tension on the belt and as a upper mount Im using some 3/8" threaded rod (left and right threaded) and a 3/8" coupling. That way I can adjust the tension on the belt by just turning the coupling either direction.

the alternator bracket will look something like this
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...torbracket.jpg Basically picture that you are standing in front of the truck looking at the engine, holding the bracket as its positioned in the rendering. The tab on the right with the 3/8" hole will be bolted to the head. see this picture http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../PIC00007a.jpg I will do as I am for the p/s pump and use right and left threaded rod and a coupling for the other mount and to adjust tension on the belt. It might possibly hold a generator but Im not 100% positive. Fla54Chevy3100's (from stovebolt.com) version might work better as it uses the coolant neck mounting holes on the head. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo...90459121eNtSyv I could draw up the plans to do the same thing if someone wanted them. The only thing im not sure of is if the generator will fit in the space, if its to long it might hit the distributor. I have a generator here, when it warms up I will go see if its possible.

I got the pieces cut out from a place here in PA called laserfab http://www.laserfab.net/ It ran me $45 to have the pieces laser cut out of 1/4 mild steel and shipped to my house. For anyone looking for a similar service I just did a search on google for laser cutting service. This will also locate local services http://www.thomasnet.com/products/la...3277201-1.html

tell me what you think

Re: power steering pump bracket for my 54 235

I think the main reason I went with mounting the alternator on the passenger side is to keep the driver side from being to cluttered. I have a clifford 4bbl intake w/ 4bbl carb and clifford tube style headers so space was getting tight, or at least more cluttered then I wanted. I seen that someone else on the stovebolt had moved the alternator over to the passenger side to make room for the a/c compressor and thought that was a really good idea.

Re: power steering pump bracket for my 54 235

Got the pump mounted. My measurements were spot on, no modifying the bracket at all. When I designed the bracket I made it where I could shift the pump forward or backward as needed by using shims. I also designed the mounting holes to be elongated where it mounts to the block so I could adjust it further. Here are some pictures

Re: power steering pump bracket for my 54 235

to anyone that can offer some assistance, I need some measurements. see this post on the stovebolt. http://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/...758#Post495758

I had asked about a want for a power steering pump bracket for the inlines (216, 235, 261) and seems there would be enough takers to warrant coming up with a design. I have the 216 and early 235 covered, just need the others. My design would put the power steering pump where the alt/gen was and the alt (might not work for a generator) up top. The p/s pump will have a dual groove pulley and the alt will run off the second groove on the p/s pump.
