Enough to reach from your hand to the oil. Depending on year and model of engine, there were different lengths for the enignes. Do you know what capacity oil pan is on your engine? If so, then fill it with what is recommended, making sure that you have countered for the amount for the oil filter and then put a dipstick in the block and verify the markings. Shorten to the right length or remark the stick.
