flatbeds!

i have had it in the back of my head for a while that i want to buy a cheap parts runner that would probly end up being my daily driver while i am going to college, and it will also pull alot of trailer once i get it set up to tow my 20 foot flat bed car hauler
i would like to see pictures of 2 wheel drive 3/4 tons with flatbeds in place of the bed preferably 69-70's
i might already have a lead on a 70 3/4 350/th350 with a flatbed and goose neck ball for $600 im just waiting on the email with with pictures and more details.
so in the meantime id like to see some pictures of other trucks with flatbeds
thanks
nate

Re: flatbeds!

What about SRW 1-tons? They look the same.

I'll post all I have when I get home this afternoon.

Re: flatbeds!

Just a word on insurance...most companies will require you list the truck as a commercial and that costs a ton! I wanted to do the same thing but the insurance woulda been 3-4 times what I pay now.

FWIW, It's easy enough to swap in a 1-ton (or larger) axle. Really, if you are going to run a flatbed, all you need to worry about is lug pattern and spring perch width... re-route some brake lines, and VOILA... you might actually have a capable hauler. I swapped a 14bff under my '70 K10 with out much work.

Depends on location. My truck is registered commercial and my insurance price is pretty normal. Registration and insurance in NY rise in accordance with the wieght you declare at time of registration at DMV. I'm sure I told DMV the very low end of what I will usually carry in/on my truck.

Re: flatbeds!

Putting a flatbed on a truck shouldn`t effect insurance as long as use doesn`t change. They can`t charge you for being in business if you don`t have a business.

Re: flatbeds!

I wish that was the case but it's not. ALL flatbeds are listed in the insurance game as work trucks. Doesn't matter if you own a business or not. They will not insure one as a personal vehicle. I have yet to hear of an insurance company that will, but hey if you know of one let me know...stranger things have happened I suppose.

I guess if you didn't tell them that would be one thing but then you run the chance of them not covering you in an accident once they find out.

Re: flatbeds!

Uh, I have a '68 1 ton flatbed insured with State Farm as a private vehicle, not commercial. They asked me for pictures and if I would be hauling for other than personal use. Rate is about $400 on the year.

Re: flatbeds!

In farm country they get low rates, mine is 170 per year, but it is a 4th car for a 2 driver family.

Re: flatbeds!

Hmm...very same company here told me that they are listed as commercial everywhere. Farmer's & Allstate chimed in as well...same story. Either you're lucky or I have been lied to by the big three.

Re: flatbeds!

I`ve never put commercial insurance on anything under a 1 ton. It`s harder with 1t and bigger.I don`t know if we can call insurance agents liars, but not being honest is one of their traits from my experience. They operate on commission, after all.I run utility beds and don`t have to insure them as commercial. You insure for intended use.If you use it in business insured as private and have an accident while carrying out business the insurance company will just laugh and say you`re not covered after taking your premiums. But,we are free to put a different bed on a truck if it suits us.

Re: flatbeds!

thanks for the insurance tips
after seeing pictures of this truck i amalmost positive that i am going to buy it, and if for some reason i dont i know i will regret this one
i reread what the current owner said needs work and he said the brakes need to be cleaned up(not sure what he means about that)
and that the fuel system needs to be flushed
for 600 dollars this truck is supper clean, the only bummer is it would be a 200 mile round trip to go get it, but i went farther to get my 68 k10
here are the pictures i was sent of the truck

Re: flatbeds!

just a quick observation:
you can't see any of the typical rust areas.

That being said, I'd buy it for ~2000

Re: flatbeds!

Isnt that funny, I own the Canadian younger sibling to that truck.
Mine has a 402/auto with a Dana 60 though.
Im gonna be restoring her so I can pull my drag car trailer with it.
I have a thin drivers side rocker but minus that the cab was perfect.
Motor runs like a champ to!

Anyways, Im new here but always read the threads. When I saw this one I had to sign up.

Re: flatbeds!

On the insurance question; my dually is listed as a 3/4 ton flatbed, and the insurance company is carrying it with no problem. Just a daily driver/personal vehicle with an occasional trailer.

Drivethechevy; I would do it! For $600 you're not likely to lose anything, and you'd have a pretty handy truck. JMO

Welcome FourOhToo
sounds like that 71? was built to have some serious towing power
your truck really is the younger sibling of this one, i talked to the owner last night and he said there is a tiny bit of rust on the drivers side rocker, and its a got a hole about 4 inches up from the bottom of the cab corner about the size of my pinky

that is a BEAUTIFUL flatbed
i have acctualy verbaly bought the truck, i am hopefully going to go see it and pay for it this sunday, and as long as everything goes as planned, the guy is going to deliver it to my house for $75 more

when i talke to the guy on the phone i found out there is a tiny bit of rust in the driverside rocker, anda couple bad spots on the cab corners, the guy has the title which really relived me ith the whole deal, cause it seems a little to good to be true at first, the brakes are getting old,he is keeping the tires in the pictures and i am getting air holding rollers with the truck, the starter is junk and there is no gas tank, the windsheild has a crack in it but its not to bad from what he said
the guy bought it in october 08 because he was in dire need of a fifth wheel and got in a divorce auction, but parked it 2 days later because he bought a ford (he is a ford guy and he doesnt like old trucks)ohh well more for the rest of us
it was restored 5 years ago, and was used to haul a landscaping trailer and sat out side the whole time, it has a th350 not a th400 like he orignaly told me, he thinks the motor is a 350 but was told it was a 327 when he bought it, there are headers and the truck was bought out of california 6 years ago and brought to minnesota

i will hopefully have the truck paid for and a lot more pictures of it on sunday or monday depending on how late i get back from going to look at the truck and its realy up to the guy im buying it from but the truck will arive at my house either the same day it or next weekend
also the shop teacher at my highschool is a classic chevy truck fan and last block (hour and 45 min) and he said he will let me work on the brakes and the starter using the schools lift, i will probly fix the cab corners and any other welding and mech work while its at school
cant beat getting grades in high school for working on your truck

Re: flatbeds!

also, i sold my dad on letting me bring home another truck basicaly with the flat bed and all the hitch mounts, it has a regular trailer hitch, a farm trailer hitch and a fifth wheel
i have a feeling that while i am still living at home my dad is going to want to use this truck quite a bit over at his farm

this will be the 4th 67-72 that is on the property, and this srping when the snow melts enough to alow me to getthe 71 out of my grandpas shed there will be 5 at my house, now i know my dad is gonna make my get rid of all thats left of the 2 parts trucks once i replace what i need to on this 70 and on the 71 and pull the rest of what i need for the 68

Sounds like a good starter truck with little initial investment. Go for it.

Re: flatbeds!

For 600 bucks you cant go wrong, especially if its running.

I paid roughly 1300 USD but my cab is really good minus the one thin rocker..I could cheat and get away with not replacing it but Id kick myself later.

I will keep you updated on my "minor" build and maybe you can take some ideas from it or I may steal some of yours

Im tearing off the ratty boat anchor flatbed thats on it now and replacing with just a simple aluminum one with diamond plate (nice for strapping down big slicks for the track). Also gonna lower it (not sure how much yet) and stick on a set of 17's....scrap the old mirrors and a nice hotrod Flatz hugger orange paint will set her off nicely.
I checked my glovebox today and noticed the Dana60 is setup with 4:10's so it should be a pretty fun little car hauler.
