How much do you think its worth?
Hi, I have been searching around my area high and low for a car or truck to fix up and I came across this truck a while back. I knocked on the door and and the guy said he would sell it and when I asked him what he would want for it he said $2500 to $3500. I was kind of shocked because to me it looked like a $1500 truck. I showed the truck to my dad then and he said it was worth under a thousand. What I would like to know is what is your opion on a good price to offer for this truck? I only have a couple pics of it right now but I can go back and get more pics and info when the weather clears up here. I guess I should give some info on the truck also... It is a 68 with the 6 lug drum brakes and no a/c. The guy told me it was his first vehicle and when he had to leave for a year and a half someone stole the carb and radio. It hasn't ran since he got back and found it like that (this was probly 5-10 years ago). Also the tires are sunk into the ground about 4 inches. He said the motor was probably junk now but the trans and rear end are good. I havn't looked the truck over real good yet but I plan on going back when the weather is nice. The only rust I could see though is on the rockers and a little inside the bed. I have been hanging around here for a while and that is what made me want a 67-72 shortbed to restore. I would really like to buy this truck but its not going to happen unless I can show the owner and my dad what a fair price would be. So based on that info and the crappy pics I have, what is your guess on what its worth? PS. It isn't as shiney or nice as it looks in the pics, It needs a lot of body work and the trim is also not in very good condition.

I would say about $1,000-$1,500.00 tops. You could by one around here running with no rust for about $2,500.00 and it would be a nice project.
Just my opinion. I paid $4k for a running 4X4 short bed.

Re: How much do you think its worth?
Around here short beds are the "big deal" if it is solid with minimal rust issues, you can name your price. But I'd guess about $1000-1500.

Re: How much do you think its worth?
Given your area, and that it's not running, $1,500 seems fair to me.
In my area, that would be a $2,500 truck and up north it would be 6K if you slapped a running motor in it

Re: How much do you think its worth?
I'd like to add, I find it odd that the truck has been sitting long enough to sink into the ground... in front of a garage door... makes me wonder... is there anything cool in the garage that's been hiding for 10-20 years?

Re: How much do you think its worth?
I'm with everyone else. Even in California, I would say that truck would be $2,000-$2,500 TOPS! Having an engine with no carb for that long would obviously mean tearing the engine apart. Although no big deal to rebuild this engine or slap in another one, it's a big deal when it comes to purchasing a vehicle and it should affect the purchase price a lot. I'm with Kayotic, offer him what you really think is fair, leave a number and walk away. He'll call you eventually.

Re: How much do you think its worth?
Offer $1,200.00 cash nd if he says no tell him to get it started and it may be worth more but right now a non-running truck in this crappy economy is worth $1,200! Walk away a nicer truck for $2500-$3000 will find you.

It's kind of strange that it's parked right in front of his garage...?

Re: How much do you think its worth?
You can just see "CHEVROLET" on the tailgate. Looks like some rust there too.

Re: How much do you think its worth?
This is similar to the discussion just a day, or so, ago. Values vary widely based on region, i.e., how much impact rust has on the vehicles in your area, and the skill level of the buyer. If you are going to do a lot of work yourself, you might not be put off by certain conditions of a vehicle, versus if you are going to have to pay someone to do certain types of work. Plus, what kind of shape is the interior in?
I don't think the carb being off of the engine is as big a deal, if it hasn't been exposed (like the one I bought with no carb, BUT NO HOOD) to the weather. The problem with the rear end and transmission being okay is that with non-running vehicles you're getting dried out seals, bearings, etc. They may or may not need a lot of attention after a long setting spell. One thing about this truck, at least around here, it's hard to find trucks that haven't been severely altered. Plus, this is a relatively complete Short-Wide, there's a frame, all the running gear, cab appears intact and not cut up, the bed is decent (yeah, I know it's hard to tell from the pictures), so it has some things going for it. Personally, based on the pictures and your comments...it's about a $1,500.00 truck.

Re: How much do you think its worth?
So you have looked high and low and all you can find is a truck that is not listed for sale and you want to beat the guy up on the price he tells you?
You are going to always pay more when you go knocking on someones door asking if they will sell something that isn't listed for sale. Think about it, in his mind the thing is so hard to come across you couldn't find one for sale and now you are trying to buy trucks that aren't listed for sale. Heck, once you left he probably called a buddy up and said someone out of the blue tried to buy that old black short wide and his buddy probably said yeah, those things go high now days. So when you go back don't be surprised if the price is $3,500 firm. I am in the Tulsa area and a clean short wide is hard to come about and will go for a decent price. I am sure if someone is needing some cash they may let one go for $1500 but if he isn't needing to sell it, it isn't hurting him to leave it just where it is so you will end up paying top dollar. Remember, these aren't the late 80's/early 90's where you could go knocking on doors and get old muscle cars for $500, with all the Barret Jackson/Overhaulin/American Hot Rod and all those type shows, everything is higher. If you came to me and wanted to buy a vehicle I have sitting at my house that is not listed for sale and I priced it out to you and then you came back later with a low ball offer I would laugh at you and I would run you off. If you really want it I would really check it out good and if it checks out give him his $2500. |

Re: How much do you think its worth?
It's hard to say with the information you provided but it may be a pretty good deal. Short beds are real desireable. Carbs, radios and tailgates are easy and cheap fixes. You may be able to get the vehicle running for less than $500 and you'll have a very desireable shortbox. Hell, half the people on this board want to know how to shorten their long beds. You didn't mention the engine, tranny, interior and rear. This information could help produce a decent value. Just by what you gave us is anybody's guess. If you can get the truck driveable for little more than he is asking, it may be a very good vehicle to start with. Sounds as if this may be your first vehicle. If I were your dad, I would possibly jump all over this. It could be a very good experience for both of you.
I'd say the only real show stopper is rust. If the bottoms of the fenders, lower cab corners, bed bottom, bed front panel, door rocker panels, bottoms of doors, and top cab corners by the windshield and drip rail are all decent, this truck may be very good. You can easily check all of these for rust by looking at each. Make sure you get under the vehicle and look at the fender bottoms, bottom of doors, rocker panels, cab corners and bed bottom. Also, look at the firewall and make sure there are not rust problems there. Don't be alarmed by welded in parts like lower fenders and cab corners. It just means the metal was replace. Do be alarmed if bondo is squeezing through holes in these areas. Hell, when looking under vehicle, if bondo is squeezing through any holes, you should be alarmed, but repairs done correctly is good.
