Truck wont start when it's hot.

Since I bought my truck it runs in the 120 range. Yeah I know thats to cold.

Anyway the temps are getting hotter around here and when the engine temp gets to around 160 and I shut the truck off, it diesels and then its very hard to start.

Would the deiseling be caused by timing to advanced and maybe vapor lock on the restart?

Re: Truck wont start when it's hot.

Have you tried backing the timing off to see if it helps? From what your saying it sounds like it may be too far advanced.

Re: Truck wont start when it's hot.

I have the same problem happening with my cheyenne, it starts right up when
its cold but as soon as it gets hot I have to cranck it several times and even
push the gas all the way down in order to get it to start back again, I am thinking of changing new plugs cables and a new HEI distributor (I have the
points one) More info will be appreciated from the guys that know

Re: Truck wont start when it's hot.

Both the dieseling and the hard start when hot can be caused by the timing being too far advanced.

These trucks run fine on regular.I believe it`s the timing advanced too much,too.160 is still really cool operating temp.

I would check to make sure your thermostat isn't stuck open there is no way a engine would run that cold with a working thermostat. You might also check how accurate the gage is. As for the hard starting it could be the timing or a bad starter that is getting hot from the exhaust pipes (install a heat shield) You might also check to see if the carb dumps gas when the motor is shut off. I had a 327 doing this and I had to install a heat shield under the carb to stop the gas from boiling over into the manifold.

Re: Truck wont start when it's hot.

I agree with all of the above. Set your timing back to factory specs, and change out your thermostat. 120 is way too cool for proper aspiration. For all, Mallory makes a kit to replace the points with an electronic set up. About 90-100 bucks, real easy to install (you don't have to pull the distributor), looks factory and works like a charm. Re: Truck wont start when it's hot.

Thanks for the responses guys. I had a feeling it might be the timing but I've been messing with diesel's for the last ten years and not gasoline engines so I just wanted to get some confirmation.

Guess I need to go buy a timing light.

Now that u mentioned the starter, it just might be it!,,,, it tends to work
differently when trying to start the truck when hot, also the gas dumping
might be another simptom, thanks for all the advice guys!

theyammieguy,, sorry for sticking my nose into your thread, I just happen to
have the same problemo.

Re: Truck wont start when it's hot.

I don't mind at all.

I know I need to check the thermostat.

I'm having two issues when hot starting. I know one is heat soak to the starter but the other is it will crank over and over without starting. That's what made me think about vapor lock.
