Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

I picked up this column locally, and PO cannot remember what it came out of. The stering wheel was a factory black one, as would be on a truck or van. The center horn cap was missing though. I think it is out of a truck, as the neutral safety switch looks to be in the right spot, and I do not think the shaft has been collapsed. The rubber boots look like they are from our trucks also, and the U-shaped plug matches. It looks like it will match up to the non-tilt column I have in my C-20 now. I have power steering already...will this match up to the lower steering shaft already there with the non-tilt?
Also, the hazard switch is red (haven't seen that before on a tilt), and there is a cruise control turn signal lever on it. Is this from a factory cruise set-up? Thanks.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

The column will fit your truck with no issues with the steering shaft.

I have not seen a red flasher button on these tilts. I have picked up a couple of Van tilts with the cruise handles on them so the truck tilts like yours could have come with the cruise.

Good find!

Jim

real truck tilt
cant explain the 4 way button
the cruise switch is a replacement for the broken original, it is a common generic GM piece used all through the 70's

Most of the Pontiac models (non column dimmer)used that turn signal lever when optioned with cruise.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

It's a truck column alright. The van column has a larger mounting plate at the firewall and the column housing is much shorter. I believe chevy used the red hazard knob up to 70 and then went to the black with the set screw (though I could be wrong) The cruise is what really has me intrigued. I've never seen one on this year group column, it could have been a dealer installed option. Cnut

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

The cruise switch is exactly what Longhorn man said it is. You can find that lever/switch in certain GM cars and trucks up until around 1976. It isn't original to 67-72 trucks. The column looks to be a truck column to me.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

Truck column, switch has been changed out (cruise- stock replacement- if buying new now about $180 bucks) the turn signal switch looks like it may have been changed out at some point to explain the red hazzard knob.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

Thanks for all the info guys! I will be putting this column in my C-20 tonight. I will not be putting cruise in it, so hopefully I can sell the switch.

in the Canadian trucks up to 1972 had a red or fade to orange 4 way button,as did some of the 1970-2 USA built gmc trucks i had (explained the USA built 1970 gmc 1/2 ton came to Canada with a six lug setup and the Canadian built came with a five lug setup) in 1973 gm went to the black two piece 4way button.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

I talked to the PO again, and he seems to think this column may have come out of a 1970 CST. I did some research, and it seems that the red button came on trucks up till 1970? I pulled it apart, and it looks like it has been there for 40 years.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

another easy way is the plug in. van are straight while trucks are curved.

This is true, but the plugs can be swapped out fairly easy.

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

early van units were curved on the plug, so that's not a 100% sure fire way to tell.

I've never heard that disc brakes came in canadian 1970 trucks... no documentation, nor photographic proof. You sure yours wasn't swapped out?

Re: Truck or Van tilt? Cruise Control?

It's definitely a truck column and the red 4-way pull indicates it could be from a 70 Model. My 70 CST had the same column.
