lol... good luck. You have to punch the lock cylinder out. My buddy had to do his and the cylinder is still sliding around in the bottom of his tank lol...

I screw a slide hammer into the key slot and bang it out.

Re: locking gas cap removal without key

Some of the new ones made out of plastic are so cheaply made that you can pry them off.

I haven't tried that on the metal one I bought from Napa but they sure don't fit as good as they should.

You might try picking the lock anyway. Chances are, you'll lose the keys again

Re: locking gas cap removal without key

I put the gas key on the ring with the car key...for this very reason. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to the gas station and the gas key was gone. I get home and ask where's the gas key for the pickup? Oh was that what that key in the ashtray is for, sorry I just thought it was a spare. So now I put it on the ring. That way the family figures it goes to the truck. Course nobody uses it but me. Isn't it funny that every time you install a locking cap on a car it seems to show up needing a fill up when you drive it more often than before.

Thumbs up Re: locking gas cap removal without key

Its pretty easy to take a locking gas cap off with out damaging the lock or truck. Find some keys similar to the original key (size and style). Then you put the key in and try to twist and at the same time work the key in and out. Called raking a lock. Also look around at some tool shows for auto entry kit. It costs about $10.00 and usually comes with a tool to remove the Gas cap called a jigger. If all else fails try to shoot it off.

Re: locking gas cap removal without key

I keep my gas cap keys on my key ring.
And I keep a spare key on the rod for the right side sun visor in case somebody need to borrow one of the truck.

One day a lady friend saw the key & asked what it was for.
I told her, "Gas cap."
She says, "Somebody could break into your truck and steal all your gas."
I replied. "Sweetheart, if somebody breaks into my truck, I got more to worry about that a few gallons of gas."

Re: locking gas cap removal without key

The thieves got mine off with quik efficient removal. They used a screw driver and pushed on the little tabs that stick out. By doing this they were able to rotate it out.
They didn't hurt the tank at all. I have since made a lock they will never get off unless you cut a hole in the cab or hack saw the gas tank. My next step is to fashion undercarrage protection as well. Gas will go back up and our trucks will be targets. GLAD YOU FOUND YOUR KEY!!!!!

Re: locking gas cap removal without key

I got my cap from LMC and I have wondered ever since if each of the caps was keyed individually or if one key would unlock them all. What do you all think?

Re: locking gas cap removal without key

Spare gas key in the truck but have a spare key for the ignition/locks made and put in your wallet. It can take the place of the credit card you would have paid the locksmith with.

It's also a good way to handle the Valet.like any of us valet park our trucks But it is handy for a dd also.
