I've been putting this off for a VERY LONG time and the rear brakes are finally screaming at me constantly (I'm assuming one of the shoes is completely gone now). I had them turned like 12 years ago and was told they were borderline back then. Going to have some nice weather so I'm gonna tear the rear brakes apart.

Napa has the drums for ~$130/pr.

Advance and Autozone has them for about $55-60/pr.

The Advance drums are Raybestos. Napa and Autozone do not provide a mfg.

I'd like to not be replacing these for a long time again. Are the Napa drums REALLY worth the extra $70/pr??? Or are they basically the same thing as the "cheaper" ones?

Probably the Napa drums are better as they have a name to back up. Autozone is that WalMart of auto parts all made in China and the tools they sell are a disgrace. BUT they have life time warranties on all drums and rotors. I've sailed through like 7 front rotors (due to a FORD ABS problem on my crown vic) and never had to buy them. HAHAHA. They make their money on the idea that an owner is probably not going to own the car long enough to reap the benefits of a lifetime warranty. Anyway, Autozone free cheap a$$ drums for life Napa, good quality drums.

A lot of the drums/disc are made by the same company and are boxed per sellers desire.Advance sells a brand called true torque that is the same as raybestos/napa ect.FYI I put on a set of valve cover gaskets this weekend made by felpro on a caravan,Advance was $35 walker,napa and carquest wanted $66 for the same part #.

I had new drums installed on my blazer 5 years ago. I think I had more problems then just the drums, my bill was like 600 dollars! They were from NAPA and have worked great.

Hey fellas.

I FINALLY got the damn driver's side off. It's shot. The pads wore a 1/16-1/8" groove into the drum

As you can imagine, this made getting the drum off damn near impossible. They must definitely self adjust then!

I'm going to go to the "chain stores" and see what they have in stock. I'm going to need a bunch of other crap too.

Geoff, if you still have those drums in April, I may have you drag 'em to Charlotte with ya

Bendix and Raysbestos are good. NAPA usually has two levels of quality. The cheaper is not very good, and the more expensive is the way to go.I also have had good luck with CarQuest brake parts.

If you choose Oreilly's they have two levels.. Go with the lifetime warranty as the cheaper ones have about 1/2 the meat to the drum.

Don't remember where , but I got new drums for my '69 . One thing I noticed is there was no knock out to access adjuster like OE drums .

I've got a pair.Too bad they're as bad as yours.They are still on the spindles whan I did my drop spindles I just pulled the whole thing off.One side even has a brand new wheel cylinder on it and that one has shoes with 350-400 miles on them.

Well, if anyone read my brake saga BS thread y'all would know I had a ***** of a time with the aftermarket drums I bought.

I cleaned them back up, put 'em back in their boxes, and returned them today. No questions, I just told the guy that they flat out would not fit over the shoes.

I'm gonna go with a used set (thanks for all the help Geoff and for holding them for me). I put my old ones back on for now. The shoes were only $20 after the core, so I can eat that cost on a new set when I get the new to me drums. I just couldn't take the squealing anymore from the rear brakes.

At least I have brakes that don't squeal anymore

Never "go against" the board!

Just throw some disc on there and be done with it. This really sounds like a huge hassel

Guess they were O.E. drums , but they had a knock out to adjust shoes . You could adjust the shoes in so the drum would come off .

"Factory drums" have the knock out to adjust the shoes on the drum itself. Take both wheels off, put the truck on stands, then I click the adjuster until it just barely starts to touch the drum, when you start to feel resistance when you turn the drum. You're supposed to be able to adjust them using the e-brake and backing up, but my truck hasn't had a functioning e-brake during the time I've owned it.

My OEM drum is on the left, new aftermarket on the right (the ones I brought back.) look in the lower left side of the OEM drum in the pic, you can see the adjuster hole. It's in both my drums and it's also in both of the used drums I'm getting too.

I bought replacement drums last year. Then less than 10 miles one got super warm to the touch was impossible. removed it took it had it turned it was out of round enough to drag. new drum mind you. I suspect the other one is a bit out too. Ohh yeah stamped made in canada across the front.

I done mine last year. Brakes and drums. They didn't want a core charge because they were made in China I beleive. Mine didn't have the know out in them either.
