smoke is bad?

started up my other 71 for a while and drove it then when i pulled back into the driveway there was some smoke coming out of the passenger side valve cover breather. What does that mean im sure its bad. and it has plenty of oil in it

Re: smoke is bad?

Was is doing it while running? Smoke from the valve cover when running is a sign of ring blowby. If it did it after it was cut off, it could be oil from a leak burning off and sometimes condensation evaporating will do that, especially if it has been sitting awhile.

Re: smoke is bad?

You may want to check your PCV valve. If it's not working the crankcase pressure is going to take "the path of least resistance", which would be out the breather.

A bad PCV valve can also cause oil leaks if the crankcase pressure gets high enough.

Re: smoke is bad?

Did your truck reach full operating temp? You may have just had some condesation inside the engine.

Re: smoke is bad?

Just to add to what everyone else has said, if it sat for awhile, it could be a stuck ring. I'd run a compession check.
