Advice on buying a good floor jack
I need one that can lift a 3/4 ton 4x4 GMC high enough to put on jackstands (I'm going to be doing some brake work this spring). From the reviews I'm reading, Sears isn't the place to get it.

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
WELCOME TO THE BOARD from not so sunny today daytona beach
things to keep in mind when buying a floor jack and jaackstands first is HEAVY DUTY.look at the purchase as something that is going to last a long long time.. make sure jasckstands are well braced and have a wide footprint to give a stabil base to support the load if you use the search you should come up with plenty of info and jacks that members have had experiences with both good and bad

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
I got mine from Harbour Freight, caught it on sale for $73, it'll do what you want to do, and seems to be a good one so far for the money. Here's the link

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
I have two of these three ton Walker and a twelve ton Lincoln. No problem of any sort with either one of them. Take the advice on the jack stands. Wide base and heavy duty. Six ton capacity at least and more if you can.

My son gave me a new Sears floor jack & a set of floor stands for Christmas 1 year. the jack is toast, but the stands are okay. I gotten better service from a Larin jack that my local auto supply wanted gone & off the showroom floor. I got it cheaper than one of his counter help bought hers a couple of weeks earlier (she was NOT happy). As far as floor stands go, IIRC, they are rated in PAIRS, not each. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
Why don't you guys like Sears jacks? I have had one for a few years, and has out lasted my other ones. I bought it and it came with jack stands, and 4 way lug wrench.
Anyways, like anything out there , they all have there bad ones. If your gunna just use it occasionally, get one that suits your budget. But don't cheap out on the jack stands. Get a good heavy duty made set.

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
I'vd had a harbor freight china special 3 ton for 10 years with no problems. It lifts the whole front of my 4WD off the ground.

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
I bought a Sears "Professional Series" jack and it is working great -- it wasn't the cheapest one, but i think it was only about $150.00
Use it on trucks, tractors, you name it ---- i do need to get some good jack stands though - mine are too small

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
my sears jack is sitting in the corner leaking oil...my harbor freight 3 ton is taking a beating. Not what I would have expected. The price was right and this thing is heavy duty, it also has a screw plate so you can get a few more inches or replace it with a trans jack.

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
I have an AC Delco jack that I have no complaints with.I think it's a two and a half ton.It works good enough for me to get my vehicles in the air long enough to get jackstands under it.
My jackstands are about 20 years old,I don't even know where they came from. They're big and orange. |

Re: Advice on buying a good floor jack
Thanks for the responses, I'm going to check out my local auto supply places and harbor freight next week. I've also got to replace the engine mounts so it's gotta be able to lift the engine a bit, I've seen some good advice here on doing that so I should be okay. And thanks for the word about the jackstands, nuthin's too expensive if it's gonna keep my truck off me.
