Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
My '76 sits about 3/4" lower on the right side(front and back) and the only thing I can figure is that it's gas tank/fuel weight. Since I have the single tank on that side, kinda like the left side of my old '92 explorer sat lower with the tank on that side.
Anyone else have this same thing with theirs, it REALLY bugs me because I like symmetry where possible... (coil springs and leaf springs are equal on both sides) |

have you checked that your springs are set correctly?

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
I'm going to triple check today but I replaced coils and leaves this week due to the P.O. lowering it but heating the coils and a rear flip/removing leaves.
The gas tank and battery on that side was the only thing I could think of that'd make front and rear measurements lower on that one side. If it was only the front or only the rear I'd suspect a spring issue but will re-check their placement today. thanks for the input |

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
Does yours have the fuel tank and battery on that side? I see the filler door behind the driver's door but a truck I looked at locally had a different bed on it with the fuel filler door on the driver side but the tank was elsewhere.
If so that might be our respective problem.. the weight. Last edited by maxreps; 02-19-2009 at 10:41 AM. |

i have two tanks so i dont think that has something to do with the weight transfer problem. I wonder if it has something to do with the front springs like they were saying before.

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
that's very common. I have had over a dozen 73-87's over the years and everyone of them did this. It's just sagging springs.

Sagging springs and body mounts.

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
My problem with that theory is that I just replaced spring at all 4 corners.. I am gonna swap front coils to see if the lower stance follows that spring, if so a "weaker spring is the culprit.. if not it must be something else.

My 73 Suburban sits lower on the passengers side too, and the gas tank is centered in the rear of the truck. It seems like lots of people have the same problem, don't know what causes it. Don't bother me to much, I' getting ready to bag it in a couple of months, I can then adjust it with the flip of a switch.

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
There isn't a vehicle made that sits level on all 4 corners. All springs have different sets, so they are all going to be different. Swapping them around may make it better but trying to make it perfect is a waste of time. Eventually over time it will settle more from fatigue.

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
Well just for the hell of it, I swapped front coils today from side to side. Same problem and same measurement too so the sagging spring on that side theory is debunked. If it'd changed for the better at all then I'd have probably swapped rear leaves too, just to see.
If it was less than 1/2" it wouldn't be too bad for me but when it's visually noticeable from one side to the other it grinds my gears. The front is almost 3/4" and the rear is a little more. I think the next thing will be to drain the tank and remove the battery. If that cures it at least I'll know why, whether I get a rear center mount tank and relocate the battery or not. Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
I had the same thing on my 77 Bonanza. I just unbolted the rear of the bed on the right side and put 2 or 3 LARGE washers in between the bed and frame (on the bolts) and bolted it back down. It worked so well you wouldn't know it if I didn't point it out. The bumper still needs a bit of a tweaking but you still don't pick up on it because the out of level bed was the give away.

Re: Anyone else's 2wd sit 1/2-3/4" lower on right side??
It's a GM truck thing. The problem hasn't improved either. On my 06 crewcab I have lowering shackles. One side is in the top hole, and the other side is in the second hole. That equates to almost 1" of difference.
