Ashtray Help
This may sound like a stupid question, but is there a way to remove the ashtray door and replace it with another one? The one in my '84 will not stay up. I don't smoke, but I don't want to look at it open nor close it permanently. I notice, what looks like, a tension spring. Would replacing that that solve my problem? Thanks in advance.

Re: Ashtray Help
yes you can, it's held down by fours screws 2 inside and 2 at the bottom of the dash, you will be able to bring out from the bottom of the dash or through to opening, also if you remove the glove box it can come out that way

Re: Ashtray Help
Thanks for the fast responses, and the the news is good to hear. I did not want to experiment on mine, in case I went past the point of no repair. I'll check on it in the next couple of days. I don't think there is a problem with the spring, but I am not positive on that. Do I need to be careful with the spring when removing it? Is it a pain to put back in? I think that if I need to replace the door, I found one in an '85 that I can get.

Re: Ashtray Help
If it won't close, your spring is broken. I have put a new one in without pulling it down, but it takes some patience.

Re: Ashtray Help
OK, I looked at the spring and the one end happened to be out of place where it connects to the side of the dash. I pulled the ashtray out and reached back and pushed it back in place so now it works. The sad thing is that I have owned that truck over ten years, and it took me less than five minutes to fix the problem. lol I should have found this site sooner. lol
