Frizzle Fry tried either painting or buffing them- I forget, but regardless he didn't have good results.

Re: Make your own white walls. Anyone done it?

Maybe it is just me but.... removing rubber from your tire's sidewall seems to not be the wisest choice out there. I know this is tough time economically but, I wouldn't want to be next to this guy on the highway with "modified" tires less yet be in a vehicle that has them on it just to save some money.

I'm all for saving a buck or two, but grinding off the sidewall of your tire is a horrible idea.

Grinding rubber from the sidewall is exactly how they are made from the factory.

The above is true. However, the additional material being removed is taken into consideration and affects the end max load of the tire.

Re: Make your own white walls. Anyone done it?

I understand what you're saying , but you have to think, you're only taking off approx. .025 - .030" to get the the underlying white ... the side wall is pretty close to a half inch thick where the grinding is done.

This has been debated numerous times on other sites and it's been shown that as long as one only grinds until they see the white then the tires are fine.

Re: Make your own white walls. Anyone done it?

This machine lets the tire spin while a mounted adjustable grinder does the work. The machine's make/model was Cosmo G-3000. I'm not sure that they are still made.

Re: Make your own white walls. Anyone done it?

I tried it on an old tire I had for another project. Its a mess!! Be prepared to be covered in melted rubber and stink like melted rubber for a couple days. Its hard to keep a nice clean edge from the black to white. They look fine from about 30' but any closer you can tell they are hacked up.

Re: Make your own white walls. Anyone done it?

Go ahead try its easy...I see my friend make them all the time, looks fairly easy but I wouldn't do it myself. He has a machine with a grinder mounted to it that can be ajusted to any width to make small or wide white walls well the tire spins Plus he has been doing this for years in his tire shop

Re: Make your own white walls. Anyone done it?

The red wall is made the same way the whitewall is. The manufacturer just uses red rubber in the mold instead of white. The same goes with the yellow walls/letters on some tires.

My attempt was with a plastic/rubber paint and was a waste of time. I have read good results using plastic primer instead, but have no first hand exp. I'd just buy real ones next time...

he says it's doable on any tire with a white stripe or raised white lettering...

Now I'm imagining my BFG 35"s with a 4" wide white wall...

Someone stop me!!!

My good friend did it to his tires on his '51 Kaiser. I'll see if I can dig up the feature articles or posts that he's done on it...
