Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
the thing you are catching on is the oil pump pickup. the bolt you are pointing to is the oil pump bolt, remove it and the oil pump and pickup should come off

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
there should b no need to remove the oil pump to get the pan off// once the pump is removed then you've got the distributor issues down the road on reassembly

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
with cdowns. The pickup screen & tube should just pull out of the pump if you twist it back & forth a bit.

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
You should be able to pull the pan without taking off the oil pump or the pick up and tube.
See if rotating the crank to get the crank arms up and out of the way will help or take out the center motor mount bolts and jack the engine up a couple of inches - slide a block of wood in between the motor mount and frame to leave the motor up while you change your pan

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
Before you jack up the engine take the fan shroud loose or the fan will hang up on it but yes if you haven't already taken the motor mounts loose and raised it a couple of inches do so.
Dropping the oil pump won't upset the distributor on a Chev small block as the distributor gear drives off the cam and the oil pump shaft fits in the bottom of the distributor. Where you might run into a problem at reassembly is getting the oil pump shaft to bit back up in the slot in the distributor drive gear. That might take a bit of effort to get it in the right position. From reading your first question this old auto shop teacher thinks that it would be prudent for you to head to the local book store and pick up a copy of "How to rebuild your small block Chevrolet" as a reference guide. |

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
DOH!!! I removed it....I only just cleared up my tools and came in and saw all these other replies. Leon I tried pulling that pick up off first but it was not for moving and at that time I did not know if it even was supposed to come off...Dam! and jacking up the engine was not an option either as the truck is on wheel ramps and axle stands so I could remove the Tranny. Thanks all you guy for chiming in on this, seems I was a bit to impatient, Michael can you post a link maybe of a parts store that would have that Teflon sleeve, I doubt i'll find that here in the UK.
By the way I wanted to show you all what was laying in the bottom of the pan....I hope there is nothing important in this bent and broken junk. Thanks for all the replies and help.

Geoff, 71super the motor was running fine just a bit tappety I only had tranny probs hence all this extra work since thats all been removed and i've got the access to everything else....hopefully it's the remainders of old probs cause my wallet can only handle one rebuild at a time. I am wondering while the oil pump is out should I buy a new one, or can they be reconditioned?

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
I would just get on NAPA online or CSK online. Its a real common part to replace and found at just about any auto parts store, I didnt see you were in the uk. Wouldnt they have it wherever you got your oil pan gasket? Sorry I couldnt help you out more
http://www.napaonline.com/masterpage...te+Shaft+Guide part #SEP22443343 on NAPA online this looks like its for a multi pack but I bet if you call theyll ship you a single one, looks like you might need some other parts also???

Thanks Michael you have helped, I usually buy my parts from Wes at Classic Heatrbeat or ClassicParts, costs a bloody fortune by the time I add shipping and a customs charge this end, but that's where i'll go for the new pan gasket.

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
A new oil pump can be had for $20-30, American.
An oil pump "kit" which has the pump. pick up tube, pump drive, etc. costs about $65, American, maybe a tad more, but certainly not outrageous. Those are "here" prices. I don't know about overseas shipping, customs, etc. As a side note, when we (my son & I) built the engine for my boat, the guy at the machine shop said we should tack the pick up tube to the pump using Ni welding rod to guarantee it didn't vibrate loose. His suggestion; install the pump and pick up with the pick up way too low & Then put the oil pan into place to push the pick up tube up. Lift the pan off and raise the pick up about 1/2" & then tack it. There is a slight chance of arcing across the crank & bearings, so I always take a marker & "index" the pump & pick up tube and do the tack weld on the bench. Lastly, for whatever it's worth, the machine shop where I learned this has had tons of race car engines come out of that shop. The racers keep going back. And, I've done some other engines after the boat & always did the same thing.

These look like lifters.
Surely this is from a old motor problem.

Re: Help with oil pan removal.............
Looks like a plastic sleeve from the oil pump shaft, some teeth from plastic coated timing gear and some remains of a push rod. Tap the pickup screen on the pump, bet you will find some more stuff in there.
