Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

You can get them(sorry I don't remember where) but IIRC you have to install a new crossmember. The original shock mounts don't have enough strength to hold them.I remember reading an install article a couple years or so ago in one of the truck mags(CCT or CT).Night look thrru their ads and call.Could be CPP?

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

summit speedway motors jegs all sell coilovers //you cant use stock shock absorber mounts for coilovers they will break in short order// you'd need to fabricate mounts both top and bottom maybe a crossmember too// just measure up what you need and order the proper length coilovers that you need for your ride highth

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

All they are, is an overload shock with a coil spring, right?

In the street rod world, they are much more of the suspension than what they would be on these trucks. I'm thinking that you want to replace your coils and shocks with the coil-overs, right? I guess I'm missing something in wanting to do that, but my preference would be AirLift airbags inside the coils, but I don't plan on needing additional load capacity.

....different strokes...

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

I have done coilovers on a couple of of this generation truck. Jegs sells a nice qa1 kit. Be fore warned you can't get the truck super low. You need to mount the upper crossmember as high as possible to get the truck to a decent ride height.

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

There was a kit a few years ago that was sold it mounted the top of the coils on the outside of frame. The bottom was sandwiched between the axle pad and trailing arms with the u-bolts. The lower part of the shock was on the end behind the arm. Pretty cool setup I thought just never could afford it. It even said you could do away with the factory coils.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

This type of kit is what I use. You can get it adjustable or fixed dampening. If you are planning on racing get the adjustable setup. These are usually mounted behind the axle.

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

Two different animals are being brought into the discussion. The Auto parts store ones are actually a coil over overload shock(used for heavy duty stuff like towing). The true coil over is actually a suspension part with a shock and spring designed to carry the weight. The AS coilovers are not heavy enough to support the whole weight of the truck (at least not for normal use).

Here is the link for the kit Scoti sent me. I'm ordering the brackets only. I'm just going to move my shocks out here for now. Later I may buy the coilovers. Thanks again.

This looks like the kit that CPP designed & sells. It is a bolt on. They have those shocks made specifically for this kit. I think it sells for over $600 & NO dealer discount.
They look so good you would want to run a glass bed floor, just so people could see them. lol
Plus you have to run lowering blocks to get over 2" drop. You can buy new lowered springs, premium shocks & even a shock relocator kit for about $300.

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

Back when I was thinking about them they said you could take the factory coils out from under the truck too. Their claim was the kit would make the truck handle better being the shocks and coils outside the frame rails which would make since. It would give the balance of the truck better in a curve for sure with everything being outside the frame rails.
I just think having my shocks moved will help mine a lot.

Re: Can you get coil overs for trailing arms??

I spoke w/CPP way back when they did offer this 'kit' but it wouldn't work for me because they recommended it be used for only 'weekend warriors' (you COULD NOT carry a stock payload capacity w/this set-up) plus as mentioned it didn't offer much drop vs. the cost (easy enough to tweak).

I too considered getting the brackets by themselves for future possibilities . . ....

What he said. There`s coil over "shocks" and there`s coil over "suspension".The title is misleading.

It`s like the difference between air shocks and air ride.

I'm thinking about making a set of them myself here at work with the scrap metal we have. I'm going to get some measurements this weekend on the truck. See what I can come up with.
