New to the Board
I just bought a 1970 c-20 this last week and have been reading from the board a bit.
The truck has a 350 with a 4 speed (I hate the 4-speed). The truck is rust free, minus a little bit of surface rust here and there, but there is plenty of work to do. I got it $450. Everything is original as best as I can tell. I am headed in the direction of getting rid of the 4 speed, and putting in a 700 r4 (I had a 200 4r in my skylark and loved it). I am also in the process of pulling the engine to rebuild it, and buying a wiring harness. Also I am hoping to put disc brakes on it as well when I have finished up the engine and tranny situation- then take a body shop class and repaint it myself. I really don't haul much, although I am sure I might at some point, and this truck would mostly be for transportation, driving around and an occasional move or something like that. For the engine I found a guy who will trade all the machine work for my webskills and so I am going to do a stock 350 build, but add a bigger cam, and headers, dual exhaust, and a performer intake. I also have considered a cadillac 472, and doing a stock rebuild, but still thinking about that. Anyway, thanks for reading. I am sure I will have plenty of questions on the truck! |

Re: New to the Board
Sounds like you have a good plan to start with. Good luck and get some pictures up so we can all see the project.

Re: New to the Board
Welcome from the Heart of Arkansas!
Custom Classic Trucks has an article in the April issue about GM transmissions. I was surprised to see them give the 200R4 a comment and say that it is under-rated. Yet, I've heard it before. Seems the 200 will fit just about any engine that GM made. So, howzabout a 472 Caddy and a 200R4?

Re: New to the Board
I have a good lead on a 472, I is the swap a major pain with engine mounts? Or do I just buy the correct engine mounts and wa-la? I know, I can search...
The 200 would be awesome, it's a nice ratio. It would need to be built up though I am sure to handle the 472. BTW, I will post some pics here in a minute. It's not a bueaty queen, but it's pretty straight and so far every bolt has come off with no problem thanks to no rust. Plus an ugly camper shell to boot! |
