It actually runs!!!!

Well, I was able to make some good progress this weekend. It starts and runs like a champ! It is missing a bit under load, so I hope to go out and check the ignition system today.

Nothing like getting something to work on your own. Feels good don't it!
Nice trucks you have there, That GMC looks right at home in the garage.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: It actually runs!!!!

Great going! Another old truck brought back to life... I bet the neighbors ain't too pleased, though.

I had one call the city on me cause I had my old 69 parked in the driveway unlicensed. Had to move it out to my country property.

My neighbors are actually pretty cool. One of them said "let's go around the block". Of course what do you do? We went around the block...a few times

Re: It actually runs!!!!

I do have a question about the miss. It still has points, and I'm only familiar with the points systems in VWs. Do they slowly go out, or is it an all or nothing thing?

Re: It actually runs!!!!

Yes the points do wear down some. The point gap will close up with wear. I don't know what your plans are for the truck but probably a full tuneup is in order if you intend to run it much. I would pull and inspect all the plugs, check the vacumn advance, check the points dwell, timing, fuel filter and such. If you don't have a dwell meter you can get it real close with a feeler gauge. Around 28-32 on the dwell angle.

Consider trading out the dizzy for an HEI unit - huge upgrade at a small price. I got a new one on Ebay for around $75.00.

Re: It actually runs!!!!

I actually have one from my brother-in-law's 400 SB. I just bought a new cap, rotor, and coil for it. So I may just swap it out.

Before you install the HEI, read some of the post on this site. You will need to get 12 volts to the dist. The stock set up only has 12 volts when you start it, then drops to 7 1/2 volts. With this low voltage, you will fry your module in the HEI.

It is not rocket science, and someone with limited knowledge of car electronics can do it, (like me).

Oh yeah, did your give you the spark plug wires?

Re: It actually runs!!!!

No, I was going to replace the plugs and wires as well when I do this. I've been searching for tips on this swap. Is there an FAQ on this?

Not sure about FAQ, but there should be a few posted threads. Just do the google search, at the top of the page.
I learned about this problem the hard way, by frying an MSD module and had to have the truck, flat bedded home. That was about a $120 lesson

Re: It actually runs!!!!

Well, I'll search around and see what I can find before I make the swap. I imagine from what I've read so far, the points definitely need to be adjusted on this truck. That might be all I do today

Unlike the type 1 VW, they will be a little harder to adjust as the dist. is in the back. But its the same process.

Good luck.

Sweet! I'm very familiar with the VWs so we'll see how that knowledge transfers

Re: It actually runs!!!!

It's easy to do. Run a pretty thick (10 or 12 guage) wire with a spade connector under the dash to the fuse box (the box has accomadations for the spade connector. Then hook the other end to your dizzy. Viola!!!!!

OR...

If you must be different you can run it to a relay mounted on the fender that will completely isolate it from everything else which isn't really necessary but you can do it. It's up to you, the first way I said is WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY easier and quicker.

I did mine with a spade connector just like that, runs fine
