dist ?
HI, have 350 sb w/hei dist. At end of dist shaft there is supposed to be a rod
that goes into the oil pump shaft. If it falls out, is it easy to replace. Found this out from an engine builder. Not sure what you mean by a movie of a distributor gear being installed in the engine. Basically the dis is dropped into the distributor hole but making sure the slot is aligned so that it matches the oil pump slot.
The distributor will rotate slightly as you insert it so there's a lot of pulling it out, tweaking the oil pump slot with a long shaft screwdriver or rotating the dis backwards a little bit and trying again. I've had to do it as much as 3 or 4 times to get it just right. One other thing you have to do, is make sure your #1 piston is at TDC and lined up with the timing mark on the engine. The rod you are talking about goes in from the bottom. The oil pump holds it in. The bottom most part of the distributor is the drive gear that meshes with the cam. If you look down the distributor hole you will see the top of that rod, it has a slot. Inside the bottom of the distributor drive gear you'll see the tab that goes in the slot of the oil pump drive rod.
Long story short, nothing should fall off when you pull the distributor out.
