Updated vs Old School Rolling Stock?

I know this is a personal choice that varies wildly but we were discussing wheel/tire choice on a 64-66 'patina' short fleet. Some 18/20" TT2's are available (used, but already paid for).

It's a tough call . . .... The TT2's are the belly-button wheels of choice because they do look nice & appeal to many. Would you use the 'free' TT2's or buy some 'new' old school type 15" wheels/tires? Steelies?

Although Bentfabs truck has 17's & 20's, I feel they're close enough to an 18/20 combo to be a good example. C10Addicts has 15x6's & 8's . . ....

Re: Updated vs Old School Rolling Stock?

I chose a set of 20" BOSS 313's for something a little different but the TT2's are great on our trucks.

Old custom classic trucks have soul. Their dashboards aren't plastic, and they've survived both the best and worst of what the 20th century had to offer. For the owners of these trucks, it's often the same story. Through both good and bad times they persevered, until one day they could turn the key and roll up in a customized truck everyone with good taste would admire.Custom Classic Trucks

Re: Updated vs Old School Rolling Stock?

while I do agree they look nice, everyone and their brother has TTII's.
I'd go with a larger steel wheel, maybe do an offset with the steelies. Plus, you have so many unique options on caps and beauty rings and such. Just my .02 cents.

I agree with you, but every body has steelies too. But what ever he chooses they will both look good.

Since I have the steelies on mine I want 18's and 20's... Coys C55s with the cast grey center... Never really thought about it though! Lol.. If I had them I would probably want steelies! lol... I like em both... Good luck with your decision and lets see some pics already...

But probably some people, like me, don't get steelies out of choice, but rather budget constraints.

Re: Updated vs Old School Rolling Stock?

I won't do big diameter steelies because of the sizes offered vs. cost factor (the only cap of choice for me is the original 64-66 hubcap).

We considered moving the TT2's to pay for some new wheels but you take such a hit sometimes. Like C10Aaddict, if you have one, you'll want the other . I was dead set on something old-school but have since entertained the 18/20 combo. But, I prefer the 'as-cast' appearance vs polished & the 'free' wheels are polished. I already have some 15x6 steelies & might just get some 8's or 10's for the back & see how I like them before looking into 'new' old-school alum wheels.

Free? Tape off the wheel lip, then blast off the pollish on the spokes. They might look close enough to the as-cast to make you happy. Or you could paint them.

Free really makes them sound good to me, even though I am a 15" type of guy on these old trucks.

Re: Updated vs Old School Rolling Stock?

I'm old school all the way. Big inch wheels generally do nothing for me.

I could have bought big inch wheels for what it cost me for 15x6 Supremes and radial www's on my old 64 gold satin short fleet.

Rockin ol skool by choice

Re: Updated vs Old School Rolling Stock?

Scoti

Maybe a picture of the truck itself would help some of the folks decide. I am working toward starting back on mine this year. Wheels for me will be steelies with stock chrome caps (reproductions). Most likely 6's in front and 10's in the rear. This is due to lack of funds. I like both ideas, but would certainly go with the 18/20 polished TT2's if I had a set "laying around".

What about ChopperDr idea for getting the as cast finish on the spokes?
