**HELP** Fast/Jumpy Speedometer

Need some info from the powers that be.......

I put in a new cable in the '72 yesterday, and it seem to fit, but I'm beginning to wonder though. I took a ride after putting it in and the speedo seemed to be not only a little jumpy, but also fast.

As I turned the corner it said I was doing 10-15mph. I made the turn from a dead stop, so I know 5mph would have been more reasonable. Even going at what I would estimate @ 30-35mph it was reading anywhere from 45-50mph.

I'm kind of wondering if the cable might need to be a little longer maybe.

Has anybody else suffered from this kind of aggravation?

did you just replace the inner cable? if so did you clean and lube the inside of the cable housing? theres a special speedo cable lube thats graphite based to lubricate and polish the inside of the housing for smooth operation

No, I only replaced the inner cable. I didn't want to have to jack with replacing the grommet at the firewall in order to replace the entire housing of the cable.

I had to buy 3 different stinking cable setups just to find one that would work. Of course, all 3 are different lengths. After getting the correct one inside, I was going to take the cable back out and use a lith. grease on the cable as I put it back in place.

The speedo wasn't working when I bought the truck. I bought a "trim-to-fit" cable and trimmed it using the cable that came out of the housing. I guess the PO had tried to replace it as well, because when I tried to connect the collar to the back of the speedo, the cable went in but the collar would not reach the threads of the speedo.
