Rockwell rear steering......WHO KNOWS HOW TO

O.K. i'm pretty amped up, i will finally be getting the ol' blue 71' up in the air i got my rockwell's ordered and i got two fronts, why two fronts CAUSE I THINK IT IS COOL . i have dug threw some forums, but was curious at any ideas (pumps, coolers, postion sensors, setups, does and don't) here at my favorite site.....so let me know what you might know.

also any one know of a good hydro steer kit....

for you guys who have ever wanted to cut your tires and not have a groover/cutter on hand........try this

i got a little bored last night and decided to start cutting into my michelins, the trick i learned was off of extreme4x4 (spike tv). take some of your old sawzall blades and grind the sides down like you are going to make a "knife edge" it does not have to be razore sharp, just knock it down pretty good and use the thicker blades. the skinny blades would get hot and start to flex cutting to much at a downward angle. it took me roughly 1 hr to cut the tire pattern out that i wanted. my pattern might ride rough as hell but it was all i could think of (not to many patterns to choose from) so.... oh well...i will see how they work. i also weighed all the lugs that i cut off and i lose roughly 20lbs a tire!! granted they are still big and bulky but will work for what i plan on doing....having fun!!!!

the pattern in blue chalk are the lugs i left uncut

Re: Rockwell rear steering......WHO KNOWS HOW TO

Are you going to run this on the street? If not, ride is not that much of a concern. If so, I would highly recommend fabricating a way to "lock" the rear steering for a few reasons. First of all, the steering will have a tendency to "drift" even though you are not actively using it, especially on very crowned roads. Continually "bumping" it back straight gets old after a while, especially on longer road trips. Plus if you lock it and disable the pump (key switch) you can allow others to drive it w/o worrying about them getting into "trouble" with it. It takes some real practice to drive one like this and it really freaks people out....
I have never done it with a Rockwell, but I have with Dana60s a few times, and a Dana44. I did them with simple electric pumps and a double throw momentary switch, no self centering or anything like that....

Re: Rockwell rear steering......WHO KNOWS HOW TO

it will not see the street in long drive fashion, unitil i get a better tire setup going and the ride height might be a bit of an issue . that is a great idea of the "turn key". i ran across a roller style sensor that i was going to use, so that i could wire a light up, so that i would know that the rear was in "center". http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.as...tname=electric my only concern is how well the sensor will work with mud/water. i was looking into using one of these for the rear steer http://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.as...c&keyword=HDD1 but what would work right GPM.

thanks for all the input.......when i get to work i will show you some pics of my buddies truck he has been building on, thanks to him it put a little under my

yes this i know. i am on there site very often it is where i am getting my rockwell's threw and have gotten some info. they can't be the only site with "THE ANSWER". THE PROBLEM IS i don't have time to read threw all their whining and *****ing and after about four posts of info it all goes to hell. if i even mention the word "MUD" on that site it is like the apocalypse is going to occur on me, EVEN tho they have a new "mud section" i'm not seeing to many big rides being built.

i'm on here because people give answers and help.

as far as I knew pirate4x4 was a totally different site then 67-72chevytrucks.com. It may have been covered there time and time again. We are here, therefor that reply has no meaning or use other than to get people annoyed.

Back to the topic at hand.

Re: Rockwell rear steering......WHO KNOWS HOW TO

I believe they make a self centering switch for your rear steering. Brother-in-law had rear steer on his 5tons. He just used a regular switch so that it doubled as a jack. It's nice to get rid of the drums on those and go to driveline brakes.

I have no useful input on the subject, I just thought I'd tell how envious I am, and to ask you to take some pics of the process, I would be curious to see how this comes together.

yes i have ran across this before and have saved to use as ideas/reference. the axles SHOULD arrive before the end of this week. then i start my own adventure on how to make the brakes work, pinion brake (should be easy) and steering. my plans were to go threw usa6x6 cause they (Daniel) owes me for an install i did, but that business is closed down. so it's kinda back to the drawling board. and as for you guys looking to save a buck i'm trying my best to save myself that buck too and make it all as fail proof and safe as i can......

so far the fun part has been going to the local metal yard and telling a guy i needed some pipe to make jack stands. he ask's "how tall" i say "6' roughly per corner" he say's "oh" (brief pause) "what the F*** you need 6' tall stands for again". i tell him "to make jack stands", and he just shakes his head

thanks for all the info that is given. and yes i will have plenty of pics and how to. As far as chucks trucks it has been a great site and i have been using it for reference, parts and ideas. the problem is their "tech section" (if i'm looking in the right place) is a ton of posts, so the reading goes on, and on, and on..........

thanks for all the help guys!!!!
