Spring measurement ???

How are you guys measuring your springs? I went to the yard the other day and picked up a set of 52" springs or so I thought. After reading on the net I learned I was measuring wrong, I went from eye to eye. They are off the rear of an 80 or so model chevy 1/2 ton 4x4.shouldnt these be true 52"ers.
