Im about to go pick up my one piece oil pan gasket today from the store and I was wondering if i need to use any silicone on it. Should i installl it as if it were a cork gasket? I will be installing with the motor in the truck.

I would use just enough to hold it in place maybe on the bends. From what I've read they work good to prevent leaking.

When I put one on the 72 GMC the instructions said not to use anything on it.

the fel pro one i used said to apply a dab on each corner.

I just got through putting one on, put it on dry and use the blue hold up tabs that should've been included with it. Once you get it on and get oil in it check for leaks and black silicone where it leaks.

Fel Pro gaskets come with directions.

On the blue one pc Fel Pro the only place you need any silicon is at the bridge/joint between the rear main cap and block both sides, and in the front where the gasket bridges the timing cover to block

thats 4 small dabs, thats it. silicon makes the gasket slide when you tighten, the newer one piece gaskets go on dry except spots noted above.
If other makes follow the directions by manufacter.

I will be using the blue felpro gasket. That kit also says that it comes with bolts. Thanks for the info guys.

Just put one of those on an engine (blue silcon one piece fel pro). They are kind of a pain to get on, but have no leaks either. Much better than old 4 piece sets IMO. Isn't technology great!

It does come with bolts, and it also comes with some plastic BOLTS? These little guys have no head on them and screw in finger tight, and will hold the gasket into place while you put the pan back on. Then after you put a couple of metal pan bolts in place you can remove the plastic ones. I have one of these gaskets on my 69

I have one too. the bolts it comes with are longer then stock cause the gasket is thicker than stock cork gaskets. The gasket has crush rings in all the holes. It also should have the blue bolts too. I put mine on dry like it said ....... but I didn't see that part about the sealent at the 4 corners in the directions... Heck, I probably didn't read all the directions. The gasket works great. I put mine on with the motor out and upside down.

One bad thing: I had a leak and couldn't figure out were it was coming from. I pulled the motor 5 times and put a new one piece on 3 times... cork from GM the first 2 times..... Well.... UH..... It was the stupid bolt that goes on the front of the block for the machanical fuel pump that was not in there. The short bolt you take out and replace with a long one to change the pump out.. I didn't put one in that hole cause nothing bolts there so i didn't think it needed to be there when i first put this motor in. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO, If only i knew about that. Could have not bought case after case of oil for 3 or 4 years.

Does anybody have the part number for a felpro sbc gasket?. I've heard some are for a thick seal and some are for a thin seal. Which one is correct?
