What engine is this?

This is a picture of the engine in my 1967 GMC 910 pickup. It has a 4-barrel Quadrajet 4MV (17058213) on it. The block is orange and so are the valve covers.

I can't seem to find an engine code that makes sense. The one stamped on the block near the water pump shows 505506367 (the first digit could be a six). The number cast on the top of the engine behind the carburetor shows 628375 and a K3 under it.

It's a V8 but is it a 283 or what? It's not the engine that came with the truck since the truck's VIN shows a I-6 engine. I took a picture to see if anyone has an idea on where else to look for a number.

The engine is so grimy from years of farmer oil-spray that the numbers I did get took awhile to find!

Thanks in advance!

Re: What engine is this?

area #1 is a machined flat spot on the passenger side of the block just in front of the cylinder head, look for the suffix there (2 or 3 digits) and area #2 has the block number cast into it. It's just above the bellhousing and is more difficult to read (faces rearward and smashed between engine and firewall)... Use some brake cleaner and a rag to clean them off... Numbers on the intake or cylinder heads won't give you all the info...

Let us know what those numbers are...

Thanks for the picture-where your number 1 position is, I have either 50 5506367 or 60 5506367. Does that make sense?

You will have to do more scraping off or clean it better. Here is a site i use all the time to ID engines, heads and such. http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm. That site can help you identify all Chevy engines, head, crankshafts, etc. Your engine is definitively small block, so look right on the rear pad of engine, before bellhousing. Should be large numbers, so easily read.

Re: What engine is this?

Well, that carb is off of a 1978 48 state Chevrolet with a manual trans.

So,if that carb is original to the engine, it's most likely a 305 or a 350 out of something somthing 1978. Sorry, I can't find too much on the numbers you posted. Try the numbers on the back of the drivers side block, where the trans bellhousing bolts up to it.

Re: What engine is this?

I will get some pictures tomorrow of the numbers on the front so you can see for yourself. Also, I'll try to degrease around the back end to see if there is anything better there.

The last owner said it was a 283 but that's what I want to know.

Great responses to my questions-thanks,

Re: What engine is this?

are there any accessory holes in the front of the heads? to mount an alternator and such? If not then it's older than 69...

Re: What engine is this?

That's another post. The only spot I can see is where the alternator attaches-driver's side way down low. I'd like to move the alternator so that the tension can be adjusted better but I don't know what bracket set to look for without the engine info.

The adjusting bracket shares a bolt with the water pump. The lower bracket is bent or not correct. I can't see any other spots to attach any other equipment.

When I picked this up two weeks ago, the belt was slipping so bad you could turn the fan freely with hardly any resistance. I re-aligned and adjusted the adjusting bracket to the lower bolt on the water pump. The alternator still sits tilted to the rear but at least the belt makes contact.

Frustrating!

Re: What engine is this?

My alternator attaches to the exhaust manifold and water pump.. without holes in the heads you are rather limited to your options unless you steal parts from a 67/68 V8 or go aftermarket brackets.

Re: What engine is this?

Well,
Having no holes in the heads makes me think that it could be a 283/327. 283 stopped in 67. If I recall, 327's also came without holes in the head too. I know someone will chime in.

Just a thought, and owning one, it looks like mine.

Re: What engine is this?

Mine did have the oil fill in the front with the original 2bbl configuration, then I changed it. The dipstick on mine is on the drivers side. Then I put a pvc on it.

Ok-some more pictures. Still can't see numbers that make sense. One shot is up close on the block near the water pump. The other is on the top of the engine behind the carburetor. Anyone know what that bolt is doing there?

Re: What engine is this?

That bolt is blocking the vacuum T fitting in the intake..

look behind the driver side head near the bell housing for the casting numbers....

Those other numbers look more like a VIN from the factory, some had that too..

yep, you could get a plug to install and pull the angle fitting out, but why bother if it's sealed...
