Power steering upgrade
I'm gonna be upgrading to power steering next weekend. I have a '64 C10 and the steering box/pump off a '72 C10. Now I'm going to get the kit from CPP. But is there anything else I will need? Any tricks to do? Anything of the sort. I'd like to have all my stones in a row before I start.

With the REZ kit I needed a 5/8" drill (i believe) I will look and make sure when I get home.....I assume you have a welder?

Yes I have access to a welder. Do the plate need to be welded on? Didn't think about that... A 5/8 drill i can get from work easy...

The plate can be bolted, you must cut and weld the steering shaft as it shortens up due to the length of the power steering box as opposed to the manual unit.
This was one of the first upgrades I did and it went smoothly. I thought the hardest part was installing the hoses to the pump as it seems they like to fight back when trying to get them lined up.

Its a bolt on. The REZ kit had the dimensions for shortening the shaft...you slide the rag joint support deal on the shaft and weld. I believe you use the arm from the power unit.

I wouldn't think you would need a 5/8" drill bit since the bolts are 7/16". But then again I've never installed one of their kits.......I make my own. I may be able to save you a couple of dollars on mine over the REZ one. Oh and you will want to use the pitman arm on the power box.

The 5/8" bit is to drill the column shaft out of the end of the column that bolts to the rag joint

There is no drilling out the column shaft required when using the REZ Engineering power steering conversion kit. The old rag joint is cut off and the new rag joint, that fits the new power steering gear box is attached to your old shaft. In fact, I believe they include a "D" coupler, so you don't have to reweld the steering shaft. I have accumulated several of them over the years because I weld my steering shafts back together.
The REZ kit does require the front, lower hole of the new power steering gear box to be drilled out, to accept the threaded stud welded to their outer backing plate, as show in the attached picture. I don't use their kit anymore, whereas I make my own from stainless steel plate. Regardless of the conversion kit you use, they are thru-bolted to the frame and not welded, but you could weld them if you want, but I would make certain the location and angle is correct, before doing so, or you will be in for a lot of work relocating it, if it isn't located properly the first time...ask me how I know. Good luck with the conversion and keep us posted with your progress with lots of photos. |

But I have to disagree with you Tony... I used the REZ kit and the instructions clearly state you have to cut off the end of the column shaft, drill out the shaft with a 3/4" drill, place it back on the shaft and weld it. It did not come with a coupling (as you can see in the pic posted) Unless something has changed since I did the conversion last summer. But I'm unsure if CPP sells the REZ kit
