Contemplation of BBC power

Hey guys, I recently bought a 396 BBC with a TH400 behind it

And its in a POS El Camino, so Im thinking of swapping the BBC into my 67 short step Tinker

My questions are: can I use my SBC engine stands (maybe flip them around) for the BBC, & with a 700R4 behind it with a shift kit, would it hold up to daily driving with a lil hot rodding here & there

Thanks, Matt

Re: Contemplation of BBC power

The big block will bolt onto the small block engine stands, but there is no way to install an exhaust manifold or header that will clear the engine stand.

If you will fess up the cash for a pair of 68-71 big block engine stands, you can use a small block rubber mount to save cash. This allows exhaust clearance and still not spend much cash on rare parts.

I did an FAQ article entitled Big block engine mounts on the cheap. There are several good pictures in there that show why the big block stands are required. It should be in the FAQ section.

454SS had the TH400. It was the last application for the beefy 3 speed.

Re: Contemplation of BBC power

Matt... I wouldn't bother with the 700 personally.
Just toss a 3.07 rear under it turned by a TH400. If the engine is at all heathy, then it'll tug pretty good, and the cruise speed will be fine with a 28 inch or taller tire. his way you have nothing to worry about in the tranny department, and since you already have it, it'll be cheaper, and then you can get something together to beat on for a while.

Re: Contemplation of BBC power

Well I have a good R4 & a shift kit for it, plus I like the low first gear & I dont think my rear end has hwy friendly gears in it, so I need the OD

I did find that the car actually has a TH350 in it, not a TH400

BTW, do yall think the camino headers will fit the 67 with the correct engine stands ???

Re: Contemplation of BBC power

Do it. You'll love the torque!
I say you go with the clamshell 72+ mounts. They're strong and isolate the vibration way better than the earlier style.

I can't tell for certain but I don't believe that header drops far enough for a pickup.

Re: Contemplation of BBC power

You will love the BB though. I have the factory 402 BB in my truck (which is actually a 396 bored another .030) and with over 200,000 on it, it still pulls like a beast!! Just installed 2 1/2" pipes with 30" glasspacks on mine yesterday with the plain old cast iron manifolds. That old school muscle sound is awesome!
