mustang 2 power rack

I have installed a mustang 2 suspension in my 1950 chevy truck. It has the power rack ,does anybody know which port on the rack is the pressure?Also what size threads are these two ports ?

Mine came in two different color. I haven't installed the steer column yet so I haven't bought the hoses. I do know you have a 50/50 shot of hooking it up wrong. If you do your steering wheel will spin violently to one side. I'll be watching this thread and making notes.

The small port is the high pressure from the pump. The large port is the return.

Where do you install the pressure regulator if you are using a GM pump? I have found the regulators for like $25. Do they install on the pump or the rack? Pictures would be good. Thanks

I did not know the mustang racks needed a pressure regulator, I have a 5.3 vortec in my AD truck and the power steering pump has a regulator inside the back of the pump in the fitting .

it goes in the pump if you have the one like mine. if you have the stock one i have no idea where. i thought the stockers uses a new spring or something.. I just went thru this issue and you need to address it asap the gm pump will eventually blow out your rack. there is something like 500 to 600 pound pressure difference. my build has a pict of the pressure reducer

I dont have the pressure reducer and my steering is fairly touchy. Not sure what Im going to do yet as I dont feel like ripping it all apart.

Do they make a pressure reducer that screws into the pump or the rack and keeps the same threads? that way I dont have to remake my lines?

cajun mine did. but my kit was from billet specialties serpentine system i have no idea who makes the pump.

here this is from their kit. the pressure reduction is in the top or hi pressure side. it replaces the fitting from gm. the connection is a hi-pressure -6 to the rack

I think the best solution is to use a Ford PS pump. Other methods do not work as well.

Not a bad idea on the Ford pump. What year Ford pump and from what car would be easy to pickup at the auto parts store. Wonder how big a deal it is to adapt to a SBC bracket? Do the pulleys line up with that type of setup?

that might be tough with his 5.3. watching this thread becase I have the same setup. 5.3/mustang rack

i had same issue when i built my truck. i was talking with an older streetrod guy he told me to cut my spring in half inside the pump to cut down on pressure. i thought i would try it till i got reducer kit. that was 3 years ago and 6000 mi. ive read where they say its not a good idea to do this. my steering is still quick but it feels alot better.speedway motors has the mustang II p/s flow valve for the gm power steering pump. oh i got the older pump with reservoir

yeah thats a load of bull, people have been doing this for years with no problem. If both solutions work fine, then the one easiest to accomplish is the best.


its the genIII engines that make this difficult. the older pumps you can use the spacers on to drop 100psi at a time.

Are you referring to adding spacers to the spring? That would increase the spring tension vs. reducing it?

nope, a company has little washer type deals that you add in around the fittings. I think its a mullens or something brand name.

Fix for the steering

My steering was twitchy before I swapped out the old 305 the came in my truck. It has an original MII rack and it now has a 1995 5.7 chevy LT1 motor with the original (stock) pump. The GM pump put out about 1100-1200 PSI and the Ford rack work best at about 700-800 PSI. "Borgeson" (sp?) steering products sells a shim kit (Part# 899001) for the outlet valve of the pump that lowers the pressure 100 PSI per shim. I put in 4 shims to bring the pressure down to within the Fords rated pressure range and it made an unbelievable difference. Now it tracks straight and smooth with excellent steering feedback and no more twitchy-ness (it was down right scarry). The kit costs about $20 if I remember correctly.

I put his information on this site a while back and there seemed to be an issue with dropping the pressure this way if your using a hydro-booster (?). I'm not up on what this Hydro-booster does but I was informed that the pressure drop with one should be done with a pressure relieving valve set up. Do a search and see what information you can find. All I know is this fixed my steering pressure issue for good, and without any extra valves or hoses.
