Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
I sold my 72 Super Cheyenne 3/4 ton yesterday. Tomorrow I am probably going to be buying my favorite truck, a 63 short fleetside. I have always wanted one of those. I like the knee knocker cab and the coil spring front suspension. 63 was the only year to get that configuration.
If I get this truck, I will be parting out my 72 beater short bed to build the 63 with. The beater has a strong 350, TH350, power steering, 5 lug Early Classic suspension front and rear, 3.08 rearend, steering column, sway bar. All of this will go under the old truck. If this deal goes through, it will be the first time in 20 years that I haven't had a 67-72 in my driveway.

I am trying to figure out what a knee knocker cab is. Is it because of the winsheld that raps around? Has to be. I could see how you might hit your knee on that. Your last pic shows it hu?

I love those trucks. One questions though, is that faded primer or did someone actually paint it pink?

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
I see now. Had to go to the 60-66 side to see what another year was like. WOO HOO! I was right. Hope it goes threw for you.
I didn't know that 63 was the first year for the coil front end. Last edited by LOW DOUGH; 04-16-2009 at 10:45 PM. |

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
Yep, the full wrap windshield makes the front of the door jamb shaped just perfect to slam you knee into evertime you enter the truck.
61-62 had front torsion bar suspension, which isn't good for me since my donor truck is normal coil spring front suspension. I have a lot of motivation to use my front suspension since I have all the Early Classic stuff and swaybar stuff already. In 64-66 models, the windshield is just curved and not wrap around. This makes the door more normal shaped, but it's just not the look I want.

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
Not worth it. The engine, trans, front dropped spindles and suspension, disc brakes, 5 lug rearend, wheels and tires and other bits far exceed the value of the beater as a whole.
Yes, it is a stepside. It just has an automatic column with a nice, late model steering wheel on it.

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
I like your style.I really have the itch for a 60-66.I`ve only had one shortbed in that style group. That knee knocker thing was a car styling "q" from the jet-age late-50s/60 era.I`ve looked at my`71 frame and considered going up with the earlier body.
Withdrawl could be painful at times(I wouldn`t know). The thought scares me to death.but, your pain will fade as this truck grabs your heart.Like it hasn`t already, right?

Plus, 67-72s are so common around here, I want something older that is more rare. I'm an old truck guy and around here, 67-72 aren't old, they are cheap and easy for anyone to buy that needs cheap transportation. That color is gone as soon as I can get it off of there. I'm thinking about suede blue paint with white powdercoated grille and bumpers. Quote:
But, I can guarantee you plenty of pictures and tech tidbits that I learn along the way. I plan on rebuilding and powdercoating everything in a real budget sort of way. No airbags or billet anything, just clean, restored stuff. But, I may be getting ahead of myself here. I still have to go meet the guy this afternoon about the truck before I commit to the deal. If not this truck though, I have money standing by and another will come along soon enough.

To me, they're just not special. I do like them, but they're not at all rare around here.

Yep, I get a kick out of the guys from the rustbelt who get excited when they see one in a junkyard in their area.
In this area, I may see 5 of them driving on the road on just on my trip to the coffee shop in town.

I say go for it... I love that style of truck. Plus it's not like you're going far... especially with the PC business now.
I hear a build thread coming soon....

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
I've been on the 67-72 trucks lately, but I've owned 3 different 64-66's. Parts are easier and cheaper for the 67-72 (sheetmetal, the running gear is the same...) Good fenders and inner fenders are hard to find for the 60-66 in this area.
One day I'll build a 64 2wd Blazer... Anyway, they all are cool, Rg

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
Looks like a pretty cool truck. There's a '65 here in town that is done similar to what you're talking about, and I really like it. I have to say, though, that you will probably not be gone for long - you're just a little burnt out right now. Once you get into that '63 and look back, that fire will return. It always does for me.

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
I need to move to Buchanan. I live in farm country also. I never see these 67-72 trucks around here. Everything I see is new from the 80's...I have fond memories of 64 Chevy p/u. I used to sit on my grandads lap and steer and shift. When I was older(10-12)he would let me drive out to the field with a 22 rifle and kill jack rabbits...Times have changed...TX, get your dream truck and revive your truck passions.

Re: Well boys, I may be leaving the fold tomorrow
By far my favorite year and configuration as well. I wouldn't kick a short stepper out of bed either though. My '72 was chosen as a project to learn on.. once I'm done with it I'll be moving on to a '63 as well. I have a feeling I might end up with both trucks though.

In miami the only way I MIGHT see another one of my trucks is if I go to a car cruise or show and possibly there might be another one like it. If I remember I believe I have seen two in the last six months driving on the road in different parts of town I seen a pretty bad ass 71 two tone red and white and a 67 swb black thats it. I think it is suoper cool that you get to see so many on the road. Good luck to you in your venture with the new body style, but I know that you will be back!!!!
